On the road
Hi, everybody! Since two days I'm a MUD-member and I thought it would be nice to introduce myself. We're a Dutch family, living for 5 years now in Suriname, in South America.
We drove a 1983 Hilux 2.4 diesel turbo, a 1996 Isuzu Bighorn 3.1 diesel turbo intercooler, and a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 5.7L V8, but in may 2010 we found, after a 1.5 year search, an LC HJ60, on my birthday. Nice present:). It was so rusty, that I could check the road through the floor of the car. It had been resting in a barn for two years and provided a home for a rat, a lizard, and an iguana. So the engine really must not have been running for a while. The owner brought two old batteries en we tried to start it. Within three seconds it started. We immediately bled the fuel system and the engine started to rumble like the stomach of my 300 lbs father, five minutes before dinner. Really as new. Besides a little vapor in the beginning, no smoke. We bought it for $3000 and drove it home immediately.
It was an almost totally standard and very rusty HJ60. 4liter 6 cyl diesel (2H). With the help of three Javanese guys in my village (miracleworkers) we restored the old carcass and changed it a little bit: OME 4" heavy duty Dakar lift kit with shackle reversal and OME nitro shocks and steering damper from man-a-fre, 1.5" home made teflon body lift, home made kinda ARB bull bar with small Warn winch, 35x12.5/R15 BF Goodrich KM2 on 8" alloy wheels, and a home made roof rack. A half hour after we fitted the last bolt, three 'o clock in de morning, we left Suriname with it for a short trip to Guyana, Brazil, and Venezuela. We love the beast and called it Methusalem because we've never had such an old car. Below you'll find a picture from when we bought it, and two pics of the new Methusalem. As soon as I learn how to place more pics on this post, you'll get more. Still enough work on this dream of ours, but eventually...
Enjoy the pics,
Wim

Yeah, I know. It was a mess. If I would have known everything, I don't know if I would have bought it!

The former owner by accident had emptied a full barrel of diesel with oil in the back. A miracle that it was still rusty:)
Picture of the Honda. Owner Ronnie made the whole spoiler kit from a little picture of another car in a car magazine. It was totally symmetric and totally made of 1.5 mm steel plate! Can you imagine that I totally trusted my cruiser with this guy?

This is the guy. Worth his weight in gold. Besides a grinder and a small welding machine these are the only tools that he used. As you can see at the pictures, he renewed almost half the car.

Yeah, I know, it's crazy. But you don't have much choice in this country.

We used paint no. 183 from Toyota. It's a color from the 80 series. Dark gray metallic/slate blue. Love the color.

Chairs are from a Nissan Bluebird. A lot better than the original LC's.

Yeah South American workers are the best.

I'm not a fan of the equator though...

The former owner was a disaster. Friendly guy, but you don't want to know the things he did with his cruiser. I almost want to sue him:bang:

Okay, the last pictures! Hope you enjoyed them. Enough things left to fix, but we can drive. Last pics are from a trip we did with friends to Venezuela.
