Hi I am Phillip. I want to introduce myself. I acquired a 100 Series Land Cruiser back in August. The previous owner put an ARB front bumper and a unknown aftermarket rear bumper on the 100 series. It also has an Old Man Emu 2" lift. I'm currently trying to get all the baseline maintenance done before doing a medium range trip to Joshua Tree in 2 weeks.

So far I've only working my 100 Series by myself but I'm going to take it Bob Smith Toyota for some preventative maintenance before my trip. However I'm thinking maybe I should check out RPM Garage in the future for work I can't handle myself. Anyways I'm sort of rambling. Just wanted to say hi. Would love to meet some of you in the future.

Hi Philip! Great to e-meet you :) post a picture of the hundo's rear end so we can get a look at that unknown rear bumper, and hopefully help you identify!

How many miles on your rig? What sort of baseline maintenance are you trying to knock out?

Bob Smith Toyota is a great spot; I'm buddies with the owner (Peter) and he is a certified LandCruiser fanatic - so you're def in the right hands over there for general/routine stuff (and OEM parts) :)

I haven't worked with RPM Garage, so can't vouch one way or another for them...but I have worked with handful of other 'local' 4x4 shops that specialize in Toyotas over the years...and there is only one that I'll ever work with again: Mayhem Metal Works in Simi Valley.

Hi Zoverlander,

Thanks for the recommendation for Mayhem. I'll check them out.

I bought it at 242k miles.

In terms of maintenance. Here are my concerns:
  • I have no records of the transmission fluid ever being changed. The previous owner only went to Bob Smith and they don't have record of a transmission fluid change either. I know there is great debate on whether transmission fluid should be changed or not if it's never been flushed.
  • Total brake failure. On the 100 Series sub-forum it looks like about 20% of 100 Series owners have experienced a total brake failure. This is scary. So I am having Bob Smith inspect my brake system and at the very least flush my brake fluid.
  • Spark plugs. I have no record of spark plug change. I'm probably going to just ask Bob Smith to do my Spark Plugs for me too.
  • My CV axle boots are leaking. I don't think is an urgent problem since it's not making any noise, but I'm planning on just replacing my CV axles in a month when I get the time. I want to do it myself because I think it's important to learn how to replace CV axles when on the trails.

Here is a photo of the rear bumper.
