Long time lurker before I bought my unlocked 1994 80 last year. Did tons of wrenching on it and sold it to a really great guy in order to fund a 100 Series. Long story short, I was looking for something with a little more power, safer for my kids, and more modern.

I lucked out and found a 1998 with a rear elocker. Most ones in my area (the Northeast) are rust buckets with 250+ thousand miles. She has brand new brakes, tires, one area of rust on the rear lift gate that needs attention, and 176k miles.

I wanted to introduce myself and share my story but of course ask a few questions.

What a difference between the 80 and 100. I am very happy.

I have searched for the last few days on my specific issues and found few solutions.

1. My drive home was 2 hours, all highway driving until the very last 10 minutes of side roads. Ambient outside temp was 55 degrees. My body temp normally runs pretty hot so I had the inside temp set at outside air, 65 degrees. One hour into the trip, while at highway cruise speed, the vents turned hot for about 30 seconds. They then turned back to normal temperature. When I got off the highway, and traveling on side roads, the vent temps stayed hot despite the temp set at 65 degrees. All gauges were normal.

2. When I was on the highway, the oil pressure gauge was completely horizontal. When I got off the highway, the gauge dropped to 1/4 at stop signs and lights. When I accelerated, it would go back to horizontal. From my research here, I know that the gauge is not very accurate and most people fluctuate. When I got home, I checked the oil and it is not low at all and looks pretty good on the stick.

3. Ambient temp was 55 degrees and the outside temp gauge showed 77 degrees.

Pictures of course or it never happened.

Nice looking rig! :) the more I browse the 100 series forum the more I feel like replacing my 80 with one, my wife told me to do it again just 2 hours ago!;)

Haha I hear ya. Same thing with me. I think she was embarrassed of the stink bug and boxy look of the 80.

She got a big smile on her face when I drove up the driveway today. Can't beat that.

Congrats bulldog and welcome to the Hundy club! I never owned an 80 - came close a couple of times, but like you wanted a 100 to fit the family and all the gear. Oil pressure gauge you describe is perfectly normal. Not sure about the heat firing, I haven't had this issue myself. I'm sure others will chime in.

Ok that makes me feel better about the oil pressure gauge.

I am hoping the heat firing is a mixing valve or something stupid and easy. I look forward to any help others can provide.

I was really hesitant to make the leap but so glad I did.

This is no expert answer but I can at least address observations 2 and 3.

I have a 2000 with around the same mileage as yours.

2. Your oil pressure gauge sounds completely normal. Mine, and the 3 other 100 series that I have driven, behave the same way - halfway mark on the highway or really anytime above 1500 RPMs, down to a quarter at stop signs. It freaked me out the first time I saw it but I gather from reading here that everyone's 100 does it.

3. My external ambient temp gauge fluctuates wildly and can be as much as 20 degrees off, or dead-on. I haven't really put too much thought into what drives this because there are no other problems (that I know of) that are related to it. They're 15 years old at this point so it's possible that the sensor just doesn't work the way it's supposed to.

I haven't had the hot air problem that you described in #1 so hopefully someone else can chime in.

Congrats on the purchase and good luck with it. I do love the boxy look of the 80s but my 60 scratches that itch.

Thanks for the help on 2 and 3. I don't care about the outside temp. That's why I have windows.

Glad 2 is normal. Just freaked me out the first time I saw it.

And as for 1, that is the one that concerns me. Set at 65 and blowing hot air. Very strange.

If you had the A/C thermostat set on AUTO, try the manual setting and see if you get similar results. If I set mine to Auto, I sometimes get the whirring of damper motors and changes in temps afterwards. I usually set mine on manual selection, set the fan speed and adjust the temp and forget about it. It works fine this way. You can search for climate control temp sensor cleaning. At your right knee, just below the key is a small "vent". If you remove the interior panel below the steering column, you can find it and clean the built up dust.

Thanks for the suggestion. It was set on manual and I will look into that sensor.

I should note, engine lights were not firing and the engine was running fine. Very strange.

Definitely something I want to sort out though.

x2, on the ambient temp sensor or mix mode servo as potential failures. I think you can check temp sensor on Techstream (good to have anyway).

Congratulations on your new vehicle and post with the details if you happen to make a repair.

I definitely will let you guys know. Haven't done much research on the tech stream yet.

Worth it?

It was definitely worth it for me, I can check DTC's, change personalized settings, and monitor AHC pressures. It's $25 from amazon for cable and software (likes to run on windows XP). Sounds like you are a hands on DIY person, it's just another tool in the toolbox.

Yeah anything that will help will be worth it. Gearing up for an overhaul before I really get her on the road.

TB and WP and all the goodies
Full coolant flush
Go over the hoses with a fine tooth comb

I just got amazon prime for a month so I might as well get some stuff on there.
