Hello,

Jumping into this forum for the first time and just wanted to say a quick hello. I've been on 'Mud for a good bit of time, but have been living overseas for the last 7 years due to my military career and not as active here lately.

Time has finally come for retirement and my wife and I are looking to settle with our family in NC, specifically looking at the Asheville area at the moment. Final location pending the results of the ongoing job search.

Looking forward to getting back into the 'Mud community and doing some camping/exploring and meeting new people!

I'm also open to advice on NC and willing to listen to anybody who has something to share about this great state. We have only heard good things from everyone we have spoken with who has experience there.

Thanks,
Chuck

Welcome Chuck,

There are a few of us military/ retired military in the group. I'm stationed at Bragg, but currently deployed to Africa till the spring. The Olde North State Cruisers are a great group of guy and gals. . .very family friendly. Im sure everyone will chime in shortly to assist with all your question.

Awesome, thanks! Not too far from you currently in the south of Spain. If you fly into Rota, let me know!

Welcome! Asheville is a beautiful area in the mountains, and close to Upstate SC (Greenville/Spartanburg), where most members of Upstate Cruisers live. There are a bunch of cruiser nuts all over the Carolinas, and it’s a great community.

Thanks! Good to know about the Upstate SC chapter as well. I'm not opposed to crossing the border :p.

Welcome. I looked at the Asheville area when I moved to this area from the Fl Keys. I ended up moving to Hendersonville. Ashville was expensive then (Buncombe County) and has only gotten worse over the past 16 years. We ended up buying a place just across the border in Chesnee SC, Spartanburg County and have been here 12 years. We still own a mountain property in Edneyville, Henderson County. You can also find great properties with lower tax bases North of Asheville as well.

The entire area is beautiful with rolling hills leading into the mountains. There are still large stretches of un developed land with nothing but horses, cows, woods and crops. If living in a development is your thing there are many to choose from sprinkled around Asheville, Hendersonville and also Greenville SC and Spartanburg SC.

Appreciate the insight! Definitely not the best time to be looking at house purchases or cars for that matter... I think I'd prefer a little bit more space. Negotiating with my wife, a free standing barn/garage would be epic too.

We have been doing a lot of Zillow searches, but it is obviously very difficult getting a feel for the properties and location. Hoping to fly in and do some house hunting at some point over the next couples months.

Also, I need to get some long overdue maintenance done on the Cruiser and will need a shop to do it ;)

Happy Holidays!

I've been head down in work, trying to power through the last couple months on active duty.

I recently accepted a job offer in Asheville. Our plans are starting to firm up! Hoping to do some house hunting in March.

Prepping the Cruiser for some exploring in NC. Just had some new tires installed (STT Pro) and unfortunately had to do the steering rack as well. Can't wait to get out there!!

Finally, made to Asheville for a short house/job hunting trip! Really enjoying it so far. Hopefully, leaving with a house contract this week.

Wish we had time to meet up with some folks, but we are headed out tomorrow to see my brother-in-law and his family in Lejeune. Then back to Spain for the final run up to moving in June. The Cruiser is getting shipped next week, so we won't see it for about 70 days :(...
