I had 1/2 this engine in my 69 scout 800. It was the biggest I-4 I've ever seen, 196 cu.

again, I aprecciate all the input here. still doing research on parts and adapters. I saw the episode on Xtreme 4x4 and thats kinda how I came to this point. it also happens that I have the 392 sittin in my drive.... To be honest, I'm having a harder time finding a 700r4 than parts. still got to find an adapter for the trans to transfer. think I might have a solution tho...
Its seems tho that I may be doing something sacreligous... I understand that it will be difficult to pull off. but its in my nature to "go against the grain". I enjoy a challenge aswell and this maybe my match.
On top of it all I love Old iron...

I'm sure it's going to be one hell of a challenge...but if you want a challenge why not install something that puts our crazy torqure and or HP numbers? Even an old school carbed 5.7 GM V-8 would be a better solution. Can you even buy spare parts for that engine?

A reall challenge is to install a toyota 5.7 in a 60.

Even if you were to get the international v-8 setup and where everything worked, including 4*4 what would you have as far as performance, in comparison to a GM 5.7?

I drove a scoutt 4*4 with the V-8 two barrel (I think it was a two barrle carb..been a few years now) quite often back years ago (in the late 80's), was our shop truck at the dealership I worked at...Truck ran fine but even then ...parts were hard to get. As I recall...you were moving when you hit 55mph or so, manual 4 speed.

Good luck with that.... I would pick another path on a V-8 swap.

the fastest I get to go here at home is 50 so I'll be moving either way... you're all right I could do a SBC or even BBC and get more torque than this motor. It may not have the HP I was hoping but it has the torque.
I'm not trying to forge a new path in LC's. I just think it would be cool to have a IH powered LC, I have the motor, it has more torque than I would ever need, and its a work horse of an engine.
It pulled the family around for more than 15 years while my father was in the military and when he moved back home later. it went coast to coast 4 times that I know of.
The engine has aleast 300k + on the OD with one rebuild when I my father moved home.

Do what you want to! I think it's a unique setup- who else has one...exactly! Plus the big kid in you will be riding your lil kid memories. Do we ever grow up? ...not if we are lucky

I had a Travellall back in the '70s w/ the 392......:frown:

IIRC about 290 rated HP......

They have an adapter plate bolted to the rear of the block thats changeable to accept a variety of trans...... mine had a 727 Torque Flight.........

Most I've seen had the oil sump in the front of the pan. Have you checked that out? May have clearance issues there.......
Just noticed this, the 727's that I've seen in IH's were bolted on w/o any such adapter. Like the TH400's in some h$$p's, they are a unique trans case. That there might be such an adapter I've not doubt, but not with the original 727 trans'd trucks that I've seen.

The oil pump is at the front of the engine, so like a Ford there will always need to be bulge there at the minimum. The Scout oil pans have a rear sump, but their oil pump and pick-up are unique and getting rare.

its been awhile sonce I posted. I still looking/wanting to do this I have the engine out of the truck and steam cleaned it. The search for the adapters is still going hopefully get started this fall when work slows down.
