I had starter issues a couple months back as well. Turn the key and nothing. After several turns it would finally start. Issue has now gone away so I don't know what the problem was/is. I did replace my contacts last summer, as I was starting to have intermittent problems back then which were solved with the contacts being replaced.

Im having this issue now.

1997 FZJ80 CE.

It will click with key turn every time but starter engages intermittently. Sometimes it will start 1st try for a whole day. Sometimes it takes 15 or so key turns to get her goin.

All manner of wire jiggling during ignition attempts defy locating a short.

Johnny, You need a plunger and contacts.....check the FAQ. Please get OEM from Cruiser Dan or local stealership.

I have the same issue but seems to happen when its fairly cold in the morning. Its been warmer lately and hasn't been an issue.

Same issue on 4runner and lx at the same time.

I had the same issue on two cars at the same time. The one put on a new starter after we got up to a dozen or so try's b4 it would start. Fixed it. New starter was rebuilt with life time guaranty, $80 will be well worth it. Fixed it right away.

On the LX looked at the battery terminals and could see build up and discoloration due to arcing. Cleaned it up, bought a $2 shim cap for terminal. Totally fixed it,,,,,for a few days.

Ended up putting on a new starter, rebuild with lifetime guaranty. Totally fixed it. Peace of mind.

I pulled the starter today and the plunger looks gnarly. Is it possible to replace that copper disk at the big end?

At least I know my way around removal and installation.

Screwed up a good pair of jeans.

Could you post up a couple of photos of the plunger and contacts. The parts are available from Toyota; the plunger comes as one piece.

I cleaned it and buttoned it back up and after about 75 key turns I was off.
And in my wisdom I took no pics.

Gonna order parts.

I picked up my intake tube today. No more duct tape in the engine bay.
Gotta love single tool repairs.

While I was there I ordered up the plunger and contacts.

Wednesday Ill see what those do for me.

Fixed it. Starts like butter.
