I am currently setting out to install a factory PTO winch on my short wheelbase 70 Series.

I am building a custom bullbar to hold the winch. The bar will be similar to an ARB.
The Winch and PTO unit that I bought was originally installed on a V8 powered FJ40 and the driveshaft between the PTO and the winch has been altered. Does anyone have a diagram of even a photo showing the route of the driveshaft and more specifically where the bearing block is mounted to the chassis.

Any help would be much appreciated.

David

Hopefully this might help, if you need driveshafts and bearings they are available at princes auto

Yea thanks that helps heaps!

Correct me if im wrong but are there two bearing blocks on that shaft?
If so is the rear bearing block in front of the engine mount or behind?

Ive just climbed out from under the cruiser and am still scratching my head as to where it all fits.there is not alot of room around the bellhousing and engine mount.

Thanks in advance
David.

Man that is just way too cold!!
And I thought it got cold down here in NZ.

Even if you couldn find the measurements a roug idea of where the mounts sit in relation to the engine mount would be awsome. Also is your cruiser a diesel or petrol? Im trying to get my drive shaft round a diesel.

David

Okay, I got off the couch....the 1st bearing block is just behind the motor mount (to the rear of the mount) around 36" from the pto housing to mid bearing, the second one is 13 " ahead.
minus 13 is nothing, I live in one of the warmes places in Canada
cheers

Theres also pto winch axle with one bearing.
Can I ask why you use mechanical winch
I though its just piece of crap...Slow, difficult to use, heavy, etc...

I had one Toyotas mechanical winch at Datsun Patrol, it sure wast fast there (like Warn Ce M8274), and didn´t have to use gear for winching

The Bumper I built myself along with a rear bumper.
I was able to raise the bumper and shorten it from the stock front porch by about 2 inches. I tried to build it as light as possible with out loosing it's functionality.
I think it weighs around 100 ibs without the fairlead.I might have more pics if you're interested.

The Factory Toyota PT winch is actually more compact than most electric winches, especially the low mounts. As with everything there are pros and cons. An electric winch can still operate and get you out of the s*** sould your engine die, But they are really only designed to be used to extract you once in a while. A PTO winch can run flat out all day without issues such as overheating. If you think about it there are very few times that you are stuck and you cannot run the engine on your truck. When hitting the serious trails we make sure that within the group there are at least two trucks with winches just in case.

That is why I am now finally installing mine. I have got tired of not being able to quickly get myself out of trouble.

Thats BS :) PTO winch can also overheat just like electric winch at swamp trails.
And with electrical winch you can slip clutch not to digg any more deeper, at swamp also :)
Thats why I like electrical, and those are just my opinions.
Hope you get your mechanical working fine :)

One mechanical winch can work a lot's more and hard that an electric one ..

Electric ones are suposed to taka a rest about 15 min in all 10 min of work ! supose that your PTO need rest about 20 min in 2 hours of constant work . ?

Electric are more easy to operate and sure you don't need to start your engine .. but in tough trails ..

Good luck with the install David, pics of mine wouldn't help much as it's all pretty different.

The other good thing about the cruiser PTO setup here is that hundreds of them came into NZ on used jap imports, given that there's not a lot of call for a winch in downtown Tokyo, most of these winches have never been used & can often be picked up for not much more than NZ$500

Electrics & PTOs both have their plusses & minuses, but in 10+ years of 4x4ing & countless recoverys I've had to pull myself out without the motor running precisely once, & a good hand winch has the advantage in that situation that it won't run out of batteries.

Cheers
Clint

PS Nice work on that bar wildwestcruiser!
