I just installed a Sony XAV-AX1000 head unit into the 80. I double checked the wiring before installing. Installed it and got no sound. Everything else works fine. Can't get the unit to give me so much as a crackle or pop. I removed the dash and triple (and quadruple) checked the wiring. The wiring harness that I used (Metra 70-8112) has plugs for the speakers that plug into the head unit.

I checked the head unit's settings to see if it has a low power/ high power setting, and it does not.

Any help from the board would be appreciated. As of now I have a $300 clock.

If you connected it the input side of factory amp it’s not going to work. Gotta wire aftermarket radio to the speaker wires on output side of amp. Use a 9v battery to test for correct speaker location.

I don't know that I have an amp. When I took the OEM radio out it merely had the plug that I removed. I then wired the new harness from the stereo and then plugged that into the existing harness.

You need to remove the factory amp, amps take a low level input and amplify it. Your new head unit has a built in amp & speaker wires are high level output. If you don’t want to bother with hard wiring the speakers to wires behind the glove box you can buy plug and play adapter.

You can use the existing installed amps if you get the right harness for your radio. You will need one like this in order to use the LC's amps -

Why would anyone want to use a inferior low power oem amp versus a modern more powerful cleaner sounding device. Modern head units have more power and way better clarity than OEM amps from that time period. Might as well buy a working stock radio and put back in it.

I tried one once. Didn't work.
Pulled the amp, ran some long wires to the plug. Works perfect.

Ease of installation and cost are a couple of reasons. The existing speakers and amps are more than adequate for many people. I do understand that some people want a total upgrade to the system. But some people do not.

maybe, but i tried the same harness in my 3rd gen 4Runner and my LC. Both had the same result.

Use the remote turn on wire for the aftermarket radio the aftermarket harness should have a blue wire on it not the power antenna one hook it up and it will turn the factory amp on no need to rewire anything and no need to remove the amplifier unless you are adding a aftermarket amplifier.

Perfect, I like simple. I had attached the power antenna. What happens to that? I was thinking of just replacing that with a permanent antenna. Mine doesn't work currently.

If the radio has only one blue wire can be used for power antenna and remote turn on. Some have two one is power antenna meaning when you turn the radio to another source besides fm or am radio the antenna will go down and the other blue wire is for amp turn on i come from car audio industry.

^^^^^ Yep, what he said^^^^ Blue wire on the radio harness should have 12v on it when the radio turns on. This will turn on your factory amps. You will need a radio harness with RCA inputs on it like the one above. They do make a harness also that has no RCA connectors. If you were going to run only the amplification that is built into the radio, then a no RCA connector harness would be fine and you would need to rewire to the speakers or speaker wires. If you like simple, the the above harness is as easy as it gets. Crimp your connections with these. They make it clean and neat and a connection you won't have to worry about. You can twist and crimp these with no need to solder.

You dont have to use the rca can just use speaker outputs from radio into the aftermarket harness its call high level input it will work fine.

The harness that I have has both the blue and the blue and white wires, however, the stereo itself only has the blue/white striped.
