A short while ago I asked for some input on a bj70 I was considering for purchase. Well I will be picking it up either this weekend, or on Monday. You guys may be getting a few questions from me so I thought I should warn you. I may as well start asking now. I mentioned that the truck needs brakes. From my brief review I have concluded that the rotors are warped. Where is a good place to get rotors in my home town of Calgary Alberta? Also, the truck may need a new edic (I have not checked the wiring or cleaned it yet so it may still be functional and only need a little attention) Would any of you locals happen to have a spare kicking around that you may be interested in parting with?

Hi Karl Im sure your questions will be welcomed.
If you are going to change the rotors you may want to consider doing a front axle service with new diff oil ,grease, seals and bearing repack and adjustment.
Your half way there with a rotor change

With all that done the whole front will be good for a few years under normal conditions.

Make sure you post a pic with some info in the readers rides sticky:D

rotors, napa and do the front end while in there youa re about 1/2 there anyway.
it depends if 12V or 24V, i have a box of edics kicking around here somewhere.
is that the black one?
cheers

Yup, its the black one, and its 12V. I cant afford a JDM import right now, but really wanted to get back in the saddle so I bought this to satiate me until I can. Its a shame to say it, but I dont plan I putting alot of dollars into it. I just want to take it out in the bush occasionally and use it as a spare vehicle. In some ways I know this is a lie because I know I develop strange personal relationships with my favorite vehicles, and I sense that this one will quickly become a fave in the same way as my previous other tlcs did.

well, come by and let's chat.. i have lots of used parts kicking around.
there is a run next saturday if you have it ready by then...
cheers

To change the rotors you have to pull the front hub. The wheel bearings will be out and then you have to seperate the hub from the rotor. Two bolts hold it on, and all the studs need to be pounded out with a brass drift and big fn hammer.

I suggest you also order 12 new studs. If you order from yota they are 12 bucks each. Order from a automotive parts shop they are a couple bucks each.

Problem is, you might have to pull one first so they can cross reference it by looking at the size and splines.

They are very hard to pound out with out damage. very easy to peen and bend.

I reused most of mine and had to buy about 4. But looking back I would have gotten the cheaper ones and just went new.

Snap on has the wheel nut socket 35 bucks. its a hub socket. 54mm or 2 1-8.
it is a thin walled socket.

There are tonnes of write ups in here on how to repack the birfield joint. In that write up the brakes are included. I too recommend going in there and doing the inner axle seals and rebacking the birf as per the tech write ups.

It a weekend job the first time. Follow the write ups and drink lots of beer.

only issue is it is messy.

you can also order from Edmonton the parts. 4wheelauto.com
has the crap. I bought the axle set, felts seals etc.

also new wheel bearings. the axle set also included new trunion bearings.

Welcome...............

I have about a dozen felts/seal kits kicking around for knuckle service.

What ever Dan sells them for I will sell for half that price, clearing out some stuff around here.

A little while ago, in anticipation of owning this 70, I downloaded the body and chassis manual from birfield; however, my file is damaged, and the link is now gone from birfield. Does anyone have a copy that works that I can arrange to make a copy of?

Karl

Welcome..

I am back in the saddle again. I picked up the 70 today. I was very surprised by a few things. First, it hit 120pkh. Till today I have never been in a landcruiser that could do 120kph. Second, there were no rattles. For a vehicle with 497000kms, I expected a few rattles, but none. I dont think that the 3b has 497000kms on it. It was zippier than I remember my 42 being. Also, it tracked straight and did not shudder or shimmy at 120kph. The suspension seats work great. I have never spent much time in them before, but wow, what a great idea. Despite these pleasantries, there were a couple of things that I had not caught on my initial inspection. Either the ujoints on the rear dshaft need replacing or there are some wear issues on the axle. It felt more like a ujoint. I have not had time to confirm. The fuel gauge, clock, and tach do not work. Also, when cold the oil pressure was in the recomended range, but after 40 mins of highway and reaching a red light, the oil pressure was quite low.

Now I need to come with a name. Usually I dont name my vehicles, but this one, well at 497000 kms I think it deserves one. I dont know why, but grumpy comes to mind.
