Got a rather long trip coming up in the cruiser and haven't gotten the new manifold gaskets on. Nice exhaust leak, really loud. How urgent is it that I fix this prior to trip? Any long term damage possible as a result of running at interstate speeds for 7 hours?

One man job or do I need another set of hands? Is it possible to leave the carb (holley) on? It doesn't look like it to me.

Thanks in advance!!!

if it's just an exhaust leak it's probably OK not to fix it for now. If it's an intake leak, this can make the car idle poorly and create an overall lean condition, which can cause some overheating, etc.

Removing the carb is probably the least of the issues regarding replacing the manifold gasket. There are several bolts and two studs that hold the manifold to the head. While I think you can get at all of the bolts/nuts with the carburetor installed, you need to pull the manifold away from the head enough to clear the studs. Also you will want to check/replace the gasket to the EGR tube, and the gaskets between the exhaust and intake parts of the manifold, which pretty much means you have to remove the manifold from the truck.

You should use a piece of hose with one end held to your ear as a listening device to find the source of the leak. Often it's just the EGR pipe gasket which can be replaced separately from the manifold gasket.

Thanks 2m and apologies as I didn't post up enough info.

Desmogged 60 running a Holley and some cheap 6-1 header. All installed by PO. I'm sure I've got vacuum (albeit limited) leaks, and intake leaks as well. Back fires under decel. Smells rich (no cat either).

Old plugs looked nice when I pulled them for tune up. Nice brownish/grayish color. None really looked fouled however a few were worse than others.

I just pulled my intake/exhaust off because I knew I had a leak somewhere's.....There wasn't any gasket in the exhaust horns...so I ordered some. Does it go in gasket first then wavy gasket? Also got the Remflex's for the whole thing.

Wavy gasket first, then the C-clip type spring over it.
Are you sure there aren't c-clips in those 2 grooves on the ends? If there are, the wavy gaskets are underneath them. Strange design.
