Well said cary. I too do not flash those with reflector type hids cause the guy in front of me will think i'm flashing him.
I once ran pnp hids in stock housings ....when i didnt know any better. Once you go retro its hard to go back to anything else, even my stock LS400 hids were no match to the fxr setup on my tundra!
I'll soon be doin my LX and look forward to some better lighting.

Uh oh. Somebody is as knowledgable with light as I am :)

Well said Cary. Spot on, I couldn't find one fault in that post...

Throw some JDM LS460's in your LS400. Run some Phillips D2S 85122+, and Denso Ballasts...mmmmmmmmmm

Its hypocritical to claim HIDs.aren't good because they provide more light then advocate HIRs that produce twice the output of factory bulbs. Just install the retrofit projectors and HIDs and be done.

You might go and reread what I posted regarding light distribution, but yes, at the end of the day a retrofit projector designed for HIDs are the best solution.

No need. I've read the source material you cite. My comment remains the same as the factory housings were not designed for the brighter HIR bulb. Hypocritical

I haven't been able to directly compare the HIR vs HID in the low beams, but maybe if someone got a luminometer or is it a lux meter to measure light and set it up at like 50, 100, 150, 200 .... 1000 ft (or maybe longer increments) to compare the output of each set up might be really beneficial. Also maybe take pictures from a tripod camera at similar distance to get an idea of the oncoming glare vs. stock low beams. But this is inner nerd talking here.

I do know that in NC, with my HIR in the low beams I get flashed by on-coming traffic a lot more often than I did when I had the stock bulbs in, by folks thinking I had my highbeams on. Always from vehicles riding lower than mine especially if in rolling areas (like sedans). It seemed to have gotten worse when I got new tires and was riding almost an 1" higher (no lift yet).

Quick question for those living in states with annual DMV safety inspection (like NC), how does one get HIDs to pass? Do you just place your regular bulbs in for the inspection and then reinstall / hook up your HIDs after passing? I'm keeping my out of state registration and license for the time being, but might eventually get a NC license.
