Cruiser Importers,
I'm looking at sending my '83 FJ40 back to Ontario in the summer of '07. I'm wonderring about import tax.

I have a receipt - original cost in 2004 was around $5,000.
On top of that, I spent heaps replacing parts, engine rebuild, body off paint job, etc. I did the work myself.

What can I expect our friends at Customs will want me to pay tax on: - based on purchase receipt or based on a value in it's restored condition?
What will be the % / rate of tax?

If there's any experience out there, pls shout back
Thanks,
desertpat

.. may want to post in 'auto-showcase' section also as most vendors advertise there.

Did it originate in Ontario or in Canada, and if so, do you have documents to prove it? I'd think if it originated there Canada should not be collecting taxes twice on the same vehicle.

do you own it now? will you own it when it is back in Ontario? if yes to both there will be no tax...
if you sell it then the buyer will get burned...

Wayne, are you saying that if I have title on a vehicle NOW that is titled OUTSIDE of Canada and I wish to bring it back and continue to own it I do not pay taxes?

My '67 FJ45LV is titled to me in Guatemala with Guatemalan plates and registration and I would like to bring it up to Canada in a few years but it was ALWAYS a Central American vehicle. Is there no taxes or duties payable then?

no, i am saying with in canada there should be no tax...
from outside Canada then the Goverment wants it's (un)fair share...

They'll want proof of ownership (registration with serial number), with proof of purchase price (receipt). they will tax the purchase price of the vehicle (GST), then you will have to pay PST on the same value when you register it.

If you've been away for at least 1 year and have owned the Cruiser for at least 6 months, I think you're duty and GST exempt but will have to pay PST if you license it. If you sell the Cruiser within 1 year of returning, I think the purchaser will be liable for the duty and GST.

Importing

Thanks for all the feedback.
I have owned the vehicle, in my name for a couple of years.
It will go into my name in Ontario.

My understanding is that when I return as a "resident", I get a break on duties of up to $10 grand max per item - but only when I am returning to be a resident - not as a visitor.
Value in excess of $10 grand would be taxable.
They require a receipt and information details of the guy who sold me the vehicle.
Since it's more that 15 years old and stock, I think it can be imported without meeting Canadian standards.

So, I expect that returning as a visitor and leaving the vehicle there, it will be subject to tax and they will charge like a wounded bull!

Man, to trake down the info I need on the government website - in simple english, is not easy to find.

Down the road, I'll shout back and tell you what happenned.
(and eventually, it will happen).
thanks
