import from CA question (2 Viewers)

I've been 'lurking' on the forum and gotten some great info on importing vehicles from canada. Well I finally found one and I'm doing my final research into this whole process. I spoke to an importer this morning. He says he cannot simply do the paper work for me and me just go up to canada and get it. They have to hold the vehicle for 3 days and then I can come pick it up from them. Does this sound right? I'd prefer just to get my paperwork and drive it home and across the border myself, to save some money as well. Any advice?

Talk to a new importer--it's not that complicated. They may not have experience doing this particular kind of importation. In any case, I just imported a week ago and all I did was fly up, buy the truck, drive to the border, picked up the papers at the border, handed the papers to customs, and they stamped me legit. Oh yeah, the importer faxes you a manifest before you fly up. A breeze. I recommend Trevor of Flatwater Enterprises (formerly of PNT): (250) 862-0897, 764-0817 fax. Tell him Brendan sent you.

So this importer is in BC? can he do the paperwork I need to import into the US?

Yep, in BC, Kelowna to be exact. Like I said, he (and the customs broker at the border) does all the paperwork. You should use him--in the middle of my import, like a few days before I flew up, his former company detonated. He stuck in there and made sure the process happened smoothly. Now he flies solo.

It's an '87 hj60. I spoke to trevor and he said it would be no problem.

What kind of fuel economy do you get with your HJ60 and BJ70? How is the HJ60 for power, compared to FJ60? What did it cost you to import?

HJ60 -@20 mpg with 200 lb of dogs and a heavy foot-say 70mph avererage
BJ70-@23 or so in the city and 25 on the freeway if I keep the speed limit maybe more
but I cruise it between 70-75 mph
The BJ70 seems more manuverable and faster than the HJ but only off the mark
The HJ is a beast and creeps at first due to low gearing but cruises nice once you get above 3rd
once in 5th I can cruise at 75mph with only 2500rpm
Also i recently added fuel and oil additives to increase efficiancy and really saw a differance

As for importation
it only cost a couple hundred dollars
considering the purchase price and that you go there yourself and drive the rig back
shipping and third party costs seem to really make it expensive

I have a HJ61 with the turbo it gets 25+ it does start off slow 1st-3rd but once in third it show its stuff,also have BJ42 it has the 3B same as the 70s also 25+,myBJ41 and 43 with 2bs also get 25+,all three of these engines are strong runners ,will never go back to gas
