Immobilizer question of a different sort...

I have a B2796 error code - communication error with Immobilizer. Can't find much about it online.

Red light on center dash does NOT flash when key is out of ignition. To me, this indicates that the immobilizer isn't active?

However, the car still starts and runs.

Anyone else have this? Can the dealer "disable" the immobilizer? Was at dealer a few months ago for ignition cylinder replacement (it broke). haven't yet torn into steering column to see if all is well there, but I assume if the transceiver portion around the key wasn't plugged in, that the car wouldn't start if the immobilizer was enabled, correct?

ps, don't come jackin' my car...

Has the car ever had an aftermarket alarm installed? Perhaps there's a hidden key/transponder somewhere in the dash.

if you can figure it out maybe people won't need to worry about losing their master key.

Nope. Up untile the ingnition cylinder broke, it functioned normally, flashing red light when key was out, went off immediately when Master key inserted... Any web reference I could find to B2796 indicated that the car wouldn't start with this condition. Guess I'll count myself lucky, and tear into the lower dash to see what's up...

The connector for the ring antenna is now loose or the antenna got damaged when the ignition shaft was replaced.

That's what I thought, but wouldn't that keep the red light on, and prevent the car from starting?

I have a cut key with no electronic guts. Will not start the car. Immobilizer "works" I guess, just no flashing light? No CEL either, but stores the code that can be pulled with a code reader... :hhmm:

I use a cut key myself and just keep the cracked master in the keychain for it to work.

i have a nearly busted switchblade key. when it dies it will make a good fob.

Has anyone tried to disable the security system or the immobilizer we’re transponder piece underneath the dashboard ?

I really don’t want to spend two grand for a total BCM replacement right now
