I’ve been lurking for a few years but now jumping in with both feet. You mudders have helped out several of my repairs on the ’84 60 and the 91’ 80 I used to have. After I sold them, it didn’t take long to start missing my Land Cruisers so, I started bugging my boss about letting me have his old ’66 FJ40. After only 4 or 5 years, he finally said, “tell you what….” and now she sits in my garage and I couldn’t be happier.
She’s only got ~64K original miles but since the engine hasn’t really been run in 25 years, hopefully everything still works. The only real rust on it that I can see is on the rear sill, the rest is just surface rust. Since I work with welders who have been giving me lessons, I’m confident I can do any patching required.
I plan on doing a frame off restoration and doing most of the work myself. I’ve got enough experience with the 2F so this should be mostly familiar and hopefully simpler. It came with a 3 speed transfer case and a 4 speed transmission. I want to keep the 3 on the tree but, keep going back to Marks post on the 4 on the tree so that might be an option, otherwise, I need to find a 3 speed transmission. I will probably do a 2” – 2.5” lift so I can run 33’s but otherwise, everything is going to be stock. I’ll post pics of my slow progress.
This is going to be my weekend driver to carry my 3 :princess:'s to the beach and to the mountains.
I love that within a few hours of it getting into my hands, a mudder had spotted me on the road and the pic was on here.

Good year for a cruiser...Love the 64' thru 71' cruisers! Hope to see its transformation back onto the road!

welcome to the sickness

as soon as you get a bezel... flip it!

change plugs, point filters, gas and go wheeling.

Welcome to the Insanity! Nice find even if the boss would not let go for awhile lol. Good to see another save!

Thanks for all the welcomes and the couple of suggestions to get a therapist.

Congrats!

I would probably get it running and get all of the mechanical stuff up to par before stripping it down to do a frame of restorate.

D'Animal, it's already more than halfway there so, figured I'd just get 'er all the way and take care of the rust stuff now.

Nice looking 40!!!

I appreciate that besides the mild 2.5 lift, that you will be going all stock on your restoration...very cool to save another old cruiser!! Don't throw out the old springs...you never know if you want to put them back on one day to be 100% all original. A correct 3speed should not be too hard to find, and my guess is someone would willingly swap one for your 4speed.

If it were me, I would make sure she is safe first (brakes, parking, steering, tires...etc) clean her up, and drive her, and enjoy her as she is for a while before doing a frame off. You can take a few steps to protect the metal, put a very quick patch to cover that spot on the rear sill, and get the color scanned and matched at NAPA or some place to avoid having to paint the whole rig...it doesn't look like it will take much to be driving. Hell you'll probably enjoy it like that for a few years yet :)

Once you've enjoyed it for a while, you'll know better what she needs, what you want, and have time to either pick up the parts you'll need in advance, or just clean it up a little more, and continue enjoying the old girl as is

MWSNFJ, Pics don't show how much under the hood and dash wasn't connected and the transfer case, bell housing and transmission in the front floor board. Since it was already that far along, I'm going to bite the bullet and try to make it as nice as the wallet and :princess: will allow.

What ever you do, just be safe and enjoy yourself

You must have a good boss to let you have that clean 40 he picked up in Arizona. Either that or he has too many projects & needs to get focused on the 1980 model he's working on:) Looking forward to seeing your work.
