ARCHIVE I'm about go turbo, is my junk gonna hold up?

If your engine leaks oil, a turbo will make it worse. If you are leaking coolant, a turbo will make it worse. If you are overheating, a turbo will make it worse. If compression is more than 2% difference between all cylinders, the turbo is not ideal.

Otherwise, the Toyota TRD SC is the same psi I’m developing the turbo kit for and that didn’t have an engine rebuilt/head gasket requirement.

But...if you have any doubts, do the headgasket (Cometic MLS) and ARP studs with the head job.

FWIW I’m posting this because I’m getting inundated with this question and I’d rather have one place where everyone with experience can chime in.

FWIW x2 I built my own engine for additional power. +1mm pistons, Cometic headgasket, ARP studs, replaced the head, bored/honed, blueprinted the head, ceramic coated exhaust manifolds, 100% brand new cooling system.

I turbo'd my truck with 315k miles give or take. Compression was spot on, so I would consider the engine in good health, but it did have all the oil leaks common with a high-mile 1fz, including valve stem seal leak and modest oil consumption.

Running a heavy oil in the summer time, leaks did not perceptibly worsen, oil consumption did not perceptibly worsen, but it's not like I have any scientific way of measuring the goop seeping out. I did have a few colossal oil leaks as I worked out the kinks of my homemade "kit." [ninja edit] I also had a crankcase pressure mishap that temporarily worsened ALL my oil leaks and forced a ton of oil through the turbo bearing seals and into my intake. I guess you could call that increased oil consumption :o

Knowing what I know now, I will probably try to fix most of my oil leaks and run a thinner oil year round rather than the heavy diesel oil a lot of us run to cut down on leaks. I will probably also do a valve job at some point in the future, and replace the HG at that time. I have no worries about the HG, but I would like to fix the valve stem seals.

Nothing blew up, the truck ran great (and still does) although turbo was removed to appease the wife. Turbo going back on soon.

The end :)

Doing the same here. Running 260k, 10000 on it since the turbo(.4 bar). I run 15 40 rotella with no issue so far. Also, to answer the question from the other post from Joey's turbo thread, mine has always puffed blue smoke on start up, and it does use a quart or 2 between oil changes, but I have never noticed a sweet(coolant) smell from the exhaust on start up.
Also a side note, the CX racing kit is an uphill battle since I got it. I wouldn't even use the manifold because it's so dang close to the ac line, now the start of spring and I need a new line and charge up.. if you eye balled it, please pm me for details, I don't want to turn this into a bash thread.

Very much looking forward to seeing wits end setup...
