I was checking the timiming on my 93 80, followed the instructions under the hood to short circut the system with a wire. It was running at 15 deg btc and set it back to the recomended 3 deg btc. My question is that if I remember the last time I did this the engine rpm seemed to change while it was short circuted but no change this time. Just wondering if anyone has noticed this or maybe I am not doing this procedure right. Seems to run about the same either way no long trips yet.

Thanks, Jeff

If you short TE1 and E1 like it says, the RPM should drop some, a noticeable bit. Computer will take over once you pull the jumper, hence why it seems to run ok both ways. On my 88 Toyota pickup I had the same problem, no RPM drop when shorted. Supposedly timing had just been set by a shop before I bought it. Turns out they didn't jumper it when they set the timing, so it was way off. Figured out that my TPS was slightly out of adjustment, once I corrected it, when jumpered it idled down some and went to base timing. Set the base timing and all was well again. Not sure if that would apply on the 80 though.

Been a while but I believe your check engine light flashes when your properly shorted.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I'm having the same problem...

When the TE1 and the E1 is jumped I get NO CEL light and the RPM does NOT drop...

I'm I doing something wrong? I have no CEL problems and I know my CEL light works.

I need to make sure my LC is timed right...

Should I do this while the engine is HOT or just warm will do?

Short TE1 and the E1. Is this the correct way to adjust timing?

I didn't find when searching other than this thread to adjust timing.

Sounds correct to me.

Sounds right to me and your CEL should be flashing IIRC
Just did this a couple of months ago you would think I would remember
I would set the timing around 5-7 degrees
