I recently bought a 78 FJ40 and was in the process of doing some minor things to it to tune it up. I have had several FJ40s in the past and they were all ignition point systems and I just set the points with a feeler gauge. When I popped the rotor cap on this one and pulled the inside cover off, there was no contact points but there was a couple of blocks about 1 inch by 1 inch and one of the blocks had a protruding piece of metal on it sticking out about 1/16 of an inch and it was about 1/2 inch long. This piece of metal was pointing toward the rotor shaft which had splines on it, no the usual cam type that is on contact point systems. It looks as though you are supposed to "set" this system somehow, but I do not know how as I have never seen this set up before. If this makes sense to anyone, I surely would appreciate your help if you could tell me how to set the gap on this system. I am a newby to this forum having just signed up today. Any help will be greatly appreciated..

It is an electronic ignition. Once the gap is set properly, you don't have to adjust it again because it is not subject to wear.

Sir: Thank you so very much for your reply. The gap is supposed to be set at .018. But, I don't know where to gap it at. Do I gap it between one of the splines on the shaft and the metal tab sticking out of the small block or just where. That is my problem, I don't kow where to gap the darn thing.

You gap it between one of the teeth on the distributor shaft and the magnetic pickup coil as shown in the factory service manual. You can find it by looking for anything that has an approximate .018 clearance between anything rotating and something stationary. Like I said, once it is set at the factory you don't have to fool with it unless the pickup goes out and you have to replace it.
