Toyota will have it but prepare to dig deep.....

Let's just say Dan's dogs will be eating rib eyes!

Somewhere in the back of my foggy mind I thought there was another Toyota (car) of similar vintage that used a compatible (yet cheaper) ignitor. Sound familar?

Jim, your probably thinking of the electronic ignition, non EFi setup in the '78-'87models. Those rigs could use the non-EFI minitruck ignitors (not distributors of course).

Yep, that's it. I didn't read the post correctly, and somehow even reading "crusier88" I was thinking he was talking about a FJ60. Sorry for the confusion.

Since we're on the topic, what is the definitive indication the ignitor is bad? Symptoms, test procedure?

Thanks,

I had an ignitor fail on a Tercel once. There was no partial failure. One minute it worked fine, the next, completely dead. I would look at your coil and your plug wires. You might get lucky.

You can get a used ignitor from a dismantler through car-part.com or TAP recycling in CA, or some such. They usually wany $100-$150 for them. Gee, it's almost worth just buying a new one...

well i have low fire .its not totally blue either. i have to pull 3 plug wires before i get a big miss first 2 plug wires i pull you can hardley tell i did. its either something in the dizzy or the igniter. i live close to fj40 jim im going to go to him he said he would look at it. i ve also got a a code 51

Color of the spark is a very very poor indication of anything.

The ignitor will not cause misfires on a single cylinder or some of the cylinders and not all. Basically the only failure mode you will encounter with an ignitor is total failure to function (sometimes intermittently, but when it works it works, and when it does'nt, the engine won't run at all..
If a 3FE runs at all, then the ignitor/distributor is the last place I would look for any problems.

What ARE the problems that you are chasing?

If you look at the trouble shooting flow chart in the FSM 3FE, the only test they show if the ignitor is the suspected problem is to replace it with a good one and see if the problem is solved. :(

In my experience, these either work fime or they fail completely. No partial operation.

It is important that the ignitor be well grounded. I've seen a couple rigs that had major gremlins and failure to run because of this.

The ignitors in the elctronic ignition 2Fs are pretty much the same in this respect. They work or they don't. Occasionally you will get one that will work until the electronics warm up and then it will stop. Runs long enough to drive away from the house and then stalls in the middle of the road a mile or so away. :(

Two years ago the ignitor went out on my 85. $700 to tow me in( i was out there a ways) and the silly part was only $375 plus the overnight shipping. Ouch, you bet! Also, in my experience, Toyota ignitors either worked or they did not.
