- Overview -
Wanted to do a build thread for my Alaskan UZJ. I made two YouTube videos to go along with this and have been putting off making a mud post about it for a bit.
Up front, my goal for my 100 is to have a vehicle that can get my wife, dog, and I to scenic Alaskan locations. This includes the ability tackle moderate wheeling trails in Alaska, being car camping friendly, and traveling further comfortably on-road to get to these places. This also includes some local winter driving. No build is perfect obviously, but I've aimed at making my 100 streamlined without fluff. Even my 1 aesthetic upgrade (grille) had the *definitely intended* bonus of leaving more space to reach my winch plug.
Probably most would call my use "overlanding", but I don't like that phrase because of all the marketing BS and it includes people who drive vans on pavement. To borrow from the Australians, I think the accurate term for my use would be "offroad tourer". My 100 is also not a daily driver FWIW.
Main 3 Build Sections:
1. Exterior Specs
2. Cab / Interior Specs
3. Storage/Camping Layout (trunk and roof)
If you prefer video, I cover sections 1 and 2 here on my YouTube Channel:
And section 3 here:
Otherwise, it's all listed out below.
1. Exterior Setup Goals:
Summer trails in AK generally involve small to medium sized rocks, steep descent / ascents, occasional ruts, mud, and water crossings that can be over the hood. For my use, touring is mostly summer oriented, with longer trips in Alaska both on and off the road.
Off-roading in the winter includes driving in the dark, so lighting is more important here in the winter than most places #lightbarsbeforelockers. The flip side is they don't get used at all in the summer unless conditions are dusty. Tried to organize this list front of the rig to back.
- Summer Tires: 285/75R18 Yokohama G003 MTs on ~2012 200 Series wheels.
- Winter Tires: 295/70R18 Falken Wildpeak AT3W on OEM 100 Series wheels

3. Storage and Camp Setup Goals:

I like my storage setup to be versatile, quickly going from day trip friendly to multi day trip friendly. All roof items must be easily removable to the OEM crossbars so I can pull into the garage when I get back home. Generally, I don’t need to put anything on the roof for a day trip, everything that goes on the roof is more suited for multiple day trips.

If you read to the end, that's a lot of reading
