I am trying to track down a squealing noise from the engine. In getting at the idler pulleys I found they have these shield-like washers between nut and bearing. One has a center that has worn away to almost nothing; I think the washer-deal may have been spinning around.

Can I pitch this part and just use a regular flat washer? Are these things actually useful?

If they are mounted wrong side they will not turn properly, it is the bearing that turns:
The pully is idiot proof (thick side washer faces radiator side) TEST THE FREE SPINNING! (WARNING! if you replace it wrong the pully will jam/get stuck and eat up your new belt)

The pully bearing is#NSK 524 6202DU2

outer diameter D : (mm) 35 mm
diameter d : (mm) 15 mm
thickness B : (mm) 11 mm

HJ 60, The parts in your pics are not the same as what I removed from my BJ74. I don't have two washer pieces like you. In my photo, only the 3 items on the left got to the p/s idler. The piece on the right is for the a/c idler.
I think I have a later, re-engineered pulley. The tension adjuster with the bolt that the pulley runs on is identical to the a/c idler... p/s idler bearing and a/c bearing are the same, adjuster pieces are the same.
