I'm upgrading the ignition on my 79 FJ40 2F to the large cap oem distributor and igniter/coil.

My stock 79 distributor has a sloppy bushing and my stock igniter fails the FSM tests (power on/off power transistor leak). It's amazing it runs at all! Gotta love those tractor engines.

I have located a used oem distributor and pushrod cover from a member here, but still lack a matching, working oem igniter. I believe FJ60 models 81-87 are compatible.

On a budget on my rusty 79 project, so patina is fine as long as it's fully functional.

Let me know what you've got.

Thanks

79 is fully electronic and so is the later big cap distributor

does your current coil/ignitor work?
won't it work with the later big cap?

I don't know but just wondering??

My current (79) igniter produces spark, albeit weak, but fails the FSM tests. It stays on without a signal from the distributor, resulting in incorrect voltage levels at coil+. This too me way too long to discover.

Bottom line, between the out of spec igniter and the sloppy distributor, my 79 has been running rough for too long.

Fyi, the 79 igniter uses a yazaki ballast resistor wire to reduce the coil voltage while running to 7v, to improve longevity of coil and distributor. The newer FJ60 igniter no longer requires that, so I'll be pulling or shunting that resistor wire with the new setup.

It's amazing what you can learn on this forum.
