What kind of hitch is this? Is it some homemade thing or a standard style?

What would one need to use on the truck side?

Thanks,
Mark

Standard farm implement

You tow it with a bar with a hole in it. Drop the pin (bolt) through to retain it.

Not really a road worth arrangement then... I guess I can move it a couple of miles like this but I would need to replace it for regular use...

Anyone have a Canadian 1/4 ton trailer lunette they want to get rid of...?

AT has a nice replacement hardware for that . If you call over there and talk to Martyn, he can walk you through some peices they offer to get you set up...they also offer Max Coupler, which would be far superior to a lunette

Here's a write up
M416 Military Trailer Pintle Hitch Conversion

and here's AT info

good luck, Pat

Mark,

Looks like you've found a 416 or an M-100. :flipoff2:

You could probably haul it home like that, just remove your trailer ball from your receiver hitch and put the pin in its place.

Flea bay has lunette castings that will bolt in place of that farmer's hack job. There is a also a guy in College Station, TX who carries lots of spare parts for M-100s and M-416s: Mullins Jeep Parts

Good luck with the restoration!

Just take the ball off your receiver bar...and pick yourself up a pin (5/8-3/4") that will reach through, and you'll be fine.

I moved my last trailer find about 20 miles with no issues. Not much up and down articulation...but plenty of side to side.

Maybe... :)

I think it is an M-100... I'll know more when I see it over the weekend...

If I get this I may be selling my all stock M-416. I have a project in mind that would require cutting a tailgate into the 416. The 100 already has one... so, we'll see.

Really? I've been looking and haven't found one. I'd like the whole setup with landing leg from a M101cdn or M416 or M100. Shoot me a link if you see one.

Thanks

Hopefully a cheap one from the look of that thing.

1. What do you think is wrong with it based on that picture? There are, reportedly, no rust holes or dents, the lights/harness. drop leg, tires and tail gate all work as they should and it has a good spare.

2. What is "cheap" in your opinion?

Mark

What model is this?

M-100 by the looks of it. It could be a WWII Bantam as well. Look inside the bed, if you see only one drain, it is a Bantam of WWII vintage. If it has two drains, it is an M-100.

1. Based on the whopping 2 pics above, it has been modded significantly and potentially poorly. I'll be amazed if there are no dents or rust. It does not appear to be pristine in the pic. Perhaps the second (or third or fourth) paintjob is just lacking. Donno. What did they weld on to the back near the tailgate? Drop leg looks to be bent forward. Where did the handbrake go? (or is it just hidden)?? What lights/wiring does it have? The original blackout lights? Where did the handles go (bantams didn't appear to have them)? also, is the tailgate original?

Also, if you are going on someone's word on a "good spare" You may not be in the best shape.

2. $100 to 200

- Just 2 pictures, that's why I asked why you came to a conclusion with so little info.
- I said no rust HOLES - there is some rust.
- Yes, it has been painted a few times - that could be a good thing.
- Yes, As I said: "reportedly" on all of this - I haven't seen it yet.
- Lights? Dunno
- Handles? Dunno if they are there, missing, or were never there.
- Braces in the back? Dunno if they are original or added.
- Dents? I meant no significant dents... geesh, our even our minivan has dents!
- Not talking anyone's work for it. I'll be seeing it this weekend.

- and you are optimistic on that pricing in general... I have seen BASKET CASE trailers in need of serious steel replacement out there that go for more than that. But, that said, you are not far off of what they are asking.

I will report back next week....

Mace and all: I do appreciate the input and discussion on this... it reminds me of the things I need to confirm before I buy anything...

I am always amazed at what people will pay for a basket case trailer. Honestly, most of the basket cases a person would be better starting off with $300 worth of steel and a $300 welder.
Money and tools ahead in the long run. Esp for a trailer you are planing on modding anyway.

Now if you are going for the true spec trailer, I can see restoring one.

:meh:

Well the M416 I have is pretty much all original including the data plate except that I rewired the lights to a flat 4 harness, got different tires and I painted it mostly.

For this little project I have in mind I need a tailgate. I'm willing to cut one into the M416 but I'd rather get one with a tailgate already and sell the 416 intact. That appeals to the purist in me as well as making more sense financially as the 416 should bring decent money.

Dont let the jealous individuals here trip you up. Get the tools out, replace the tractor style tow bar hookup with a 2 inch receiver tube buy a decent ball and towbar and drive it anywhere behind your rig. Everyone uses AT as a source for all parts, there are better, and cheaper units out there, nothing wrong with AT except it is easier to build your own with a little research for parts, there is a great thread in the forum on sources for parts. have fun

x2 :D
Get the trailer and have fun! PS - I saw your other pictures on the M416 Yahoo Group page. The trailer looks good.

So I saw the trailer today and I passed... I probably could have gotten it for $150 or $200. It had some spots, like at the rear corners, where I could poke a screwdriver through the tub. The frame seemed good and most of the tub was fine. One of the fenders was crunched up some. The tailgate looked to not be a stock one and not a stellar build, not original lights. It has been painted about 4000 times. Restorable for sure... but a project for sure. Lots of blasting ($) or elbow grease (time)...

The reason I was interested was that I wanted to save time and work in my little project - especially in not having to cut and build a tailgate. This trailer would have been a bigger project for me than just dealing with what I already have. If I didn't own the 416 I would have gotten this one but I do not need a new project...

Mark

Does it have a tailgate? (Edit - I see you said in the previous post it has a tailgate)

The reason I ask is that it only appears to have three tie downs on the side. Military trailer shave four tie downs. The civilian Bantams only have three.

Is there a parking brake or brake drums on the wheels? The civilian trailers only had hubs.
