Pulled the trans / tcase on the Rescue 40 tonight. I decided to also pull the oil pan, glad I did as it turns out the oil leak was a result of bad oil pan gasket install.

I found some debris in the pan, this stuff is non-metalic and apears to look allot like solder,,..

Here is a pick of the oil pan and said debris.... Anyone seen anything like this before..... Oil was clean and no other debris was evident.

Yep. Melted bearings extruded out of the journals and cooled as it hit the oil in the pan.

Shat! Nothing is loose if thats any indication. I will drop a couple off and take a closer look.

#6 Rod Bearing... Looks as though i need a set.....

Its wild that it was running with that much bearing fallout:confused: or was it? Just for grins:grinpimp: try to melt some of that stuff with a soldering gun.
 
I did not drop anymore. I will inspct a few more. I have never been this far into this engine. Can I just toss bearings at it or do I need to pull it and rebuild it? I have another fine running "F" i could put in there but I woul like to use this one...

It was running fine, just leaked a boat load of oil.
 
These things really are simple...as least as far as the rods are concerned…



The mains are a different story, since they are shimmed (or are supposed to be in this early F) so when you drop the main cap, look for the shim and how it was installed.


If you take stock bearings out, you can put stock bearings back it, you will just want to verify the clearance with plastigauge.

If you are considering main brg. replacement? and the brand name ITM comes into play, beware of the clearances on the thrust journal... there some unresolved issues on the proper fit in some shell sets mfg. for the 1F.....
 
Thanks guys. Plan is to pull rad bearing caps and hope I find a spun rod bearing. Plan "B" I will pull mains.... Hopefully I find a rod bearing bad...then I can just get a set of those and call it done..

Did you try to melt some of that stuff as a test? If not, give it a try, inquiring minds want to know.
 
With molten babbit material in sizes that big don't count too heavily on getting away with a simple bearing change. You ought to measure all the journals with an eye to a possible need for a crank regrind.

that stuff could be piston skirt material too..........

I know it's a tough engine and all that but halfway fixes usually only get you halfway to where you're going.

I can try that tonight.

I am also going to pull the remaining rod bearings tonight. I have an extra F135 in the shop, if I can't find a definitive source for the stuff I will pull it and put the other Fire Breathing F in there....

I finally got around to pulling the rest of the rod bearings. And there it was, number 3,4 rods..... spunem both... Looks like this one will come out and get the treatment......

Its pretty roughed up. At the very least it needs to be ground.. I have a really good engine guy I may take it to. For what I have into the truck it may be worth going over the engine...get the head done with hardened seats, ground crank, new rings and bearings and stick it back in...... I have two options right now, 1) stick that known good F in there from my other project truck, 2) Get this one a light rebuild...... either way its allot of Fn around, no pun intended, the "newer" F has "stuff" on there I would have to rewire and think about..... It will take e about an hour to get that bad boy on the floor, I will have to drink about it for awhile......

I would like to bring life back to this Ol F....
