Have trip to LA planned for a client in May. Our client said I should should check these boys out while I'm there. Looks pretty sweet :)

I believe they were started by Jonathan Ward of TLC in Van Nuys. Basically building an up to date 40 with Toy & Chevy parts. Outrageously priced if I remember right but super clean and stout hardware.

No they're pretty cheap...compared to a house, like only $150k. They aren't identical to the body of an fj40, which loses the Toyota appeal of them. You could build one with an identical drivetrain using an actual fj40 for about $25,000. I think its funny that its supposed to be the "ultimate" machine yet uses a Dana 44 front axle. ARB's are optional as well as most any other worthwhile option that you'd expect for a 6 digit costing vehicle.

Holy moly 150k. Figured they were spendy but not that spendy. Guess their "competitive financing" is close to mortage lol.

Not my style, was just interested in checking them out.

I think it'd be ok to check them out, look them over and see what they offer, but I've seen one in person and just don't think it's worth the $$$

The bodies IIRC are hand made aluminum (?) and all the running gear is new age chit.

Still not worth the $$$

Give me an old box and some newer guts and I'm a happy camper:cheers:

Funny you brought this up, I just read a one page article on them in Maxim today.

Here's a few for sale if you feel like mortgaging the house. Looks like there's a cheapo one on there for $96k, but it looks like it may have been a prototype so I'm betting the other bits and pieces from newer ones one fit it. Could you imagine flopping your $100k+ vehicle on the trail? OUCH!!

funny you mention john ward.
we built an Ariel Atom for him.

i also go t the pleasure of seeing a 62 that he resto'd i think the price tag was like 80k

mr ward is a proud man.

Yep, my Uncle I work for is down there and he went by to see about getting his 62 redone and engine swap with it. Somewhere around $45K was the quote to swap in a smog legal V8 and restore the rig.

G,

Did you read that article on the john? :D

I didn't think you could see in my bathroom window :flipoff2:

they have an option for an IH 4 popper diesel, can't remember what size, 2.8 comes to mind though with a variable geometry turbo and common rail like the Vm Motori in my old liberty:ban:

that would be cool but not for the price.

i used to work for the company that built the Atom for the american market. it is/was in ashland. they are no longer building the atom, hence me no longer there.
i started there doing assembly and ended up doing service manager/quality control and most importantly TEST DRIVER!:flipoff2:
so i am technically one of a handful of actual atom "techs".
no, you cant touch me :flipoff2:
having not been behind the wheel of an atom in nearly a year has me on a bit of a speed jonze:steer:.

Nice connection gnob... I can't believe you even talk to us..

Retro- Stop at TLC 4X4.. SOR is cool but if you aren't buying something it might not be worth the time, they have some nifty rigs on display usually. I've taken my family along and they usually end up dehydrated and overheated by the time I get back in the car at either place. I wouldn't make fun of you if you ended up buying an ICON either.
