so...... if anyone local to the Charlotte area has any welding project they are working on, I would love to watch and possibly lend a hand because my other hand and back are out of commission. Just so I can watch and ask questions I do have welding mask and gloves and apron and a piece of crap welder. So in a month or so I will have a bunch of free time. Any welders out there think they can tolerate me?

You can take a trip up here to Durham. Always have projects to work on.

I'd offer to teach you but I'd only be teaching you my bad habits. You may be able to get in on a welding class locally as they probably just started up. I'd go there while you are laid up, learn from someone that should be up to date with what is going on in the welding industry. Then go hang with one or more of us that can show you things more specific to the current job we are working on.

This is on my list of wants. Durham tech has classes and I've come close to signing up. I can already make things stick together and look ok but I'd like to know the correct way as well to learn metallurgy details, etc.

Me too! I've got a Hobart handler 120 that a friend gave me

My biggest problem is free time

looks like I will learn reloading sooner than later.....hope to see yall soon guys....hoping everyone made it through the storm ok..

I learned by buying a welder and supplies and picking up some scrap steel. My first welds were crap and my metal prep was awful. I couldn't tell the difference between a cold weld and a deep weld. Eventually I learned and would classify myself as just ok but would still be a novice by experts standards. It is a fantastic skill to have and I will be building a fishing pole holder for the Portsmouth Island trip.

I looked into classes, cost as much as the equipment... time to read up and try something...
