my dog, doesnt like black people. she always barks and growls at them. the funny thing is she is a chocolate lab.

Same with my Chocolate.

He just goes berserk.

Very unlike him to get all bristled up and snarly. He even does it at a "bronze" statue that is downtown. We live out in the country and his "socialization" has been limited to my family and friends and exposure to other dogs (and their owners) at field trials.

He's never been in contact with a person of color to my knowledge, so why the whole snarly, growly, show the teeth thing? He's not " just a woofing" when he gets like that, I really believe he would bite.

forget dogs, who's little kids have exhibited fear or used inappropriate adjectives to describe people of colour?

just asking. not like it's happened to me or anything

or embarassing statements in general?

"hey, that lady is really fat!"
"why is that lady's hair so curly?"

same solution, IMHO...education, training, socialization.

My dad is VERY dark hispanic, my mom is a a very white blonde. My wife's parents are reversed (he's white, she is very dark) so we havent had that issue with our kids.

But, Zoe has always called my dad Gogo, and we were in Safeway one time and there was a black woman shopping. Zoe couldnt keep her eyes off of her but at the same time wasnt staring, and she finally leaned forward and tells Tricia "Mom, that lady is even more dark brown then my Gogo!"

I just asked a lady I work with, her husband is a SO, K9 unit, and they have a really really well trained dog.
Anyway, her husband says that different races smell differently to dogs, and they are also visually different to the dog. He may be associating the visual cues or order with something negative.

Dont know if thats accurate or not, but its a thought.

It could be a combination of factors; sight, smell, voice tones, the way the person is walking, or if they're carrying something or talking loudly. Different things trigger different dogs, irregardless of race.

Your dog may be relying more on one sense more than another to determine what's "OK". When I was a kid I almost never went swimming in pools, one day I walked in my back yard after getting out of my neighbor's recently chlorinated pool and my Heeler freaked out like she'd never seen me before. Once I started talking she calmed down and cautiously sniffed me. She seemed to be trying to reconclie what she saw and heard, with what she smelled. It's all about experience and socialization.

What kind of dog is it? I know some dogs were bread to hate black people. For instance the white german sheppard breed. I dont understand why they were bred that way, tehy are nice looking dogs but you cant have any non-white friends when you own one

Where I live now, I would admit I would be hard pressed to find a black person I know well enough to ask. Naperville is fairly homogonous.

LOL...so true. we called Naperville "Whiteyville" when we lived there.... :D

Almost true. Had one from 6 years old til I was 20. She hated black MEN.

Black girls, she loved. I don't think it was for the same reason I did. ;)

We had a saddleback bloodhound in California, and for some reason the dog hated hispanics. We wondered why for the longest time, then we cought some local "hispanic" kids teasing the dog through the fence. Problem solved. I think NorCalDoug has the best answer, especially as a puppy take the dog everywhere and socialize it with as many different people/animals as possible.

I lived on an Island in the Torres Straight, between Cape York Australia and PapuaNew Guinea for some time. There was only one other whiteman on the Island some dogs there used to get a bit agressive and some were plain shaken up at the first meeting with a white boy[ really scared and bewildered]. After several months they were all pretty cool with the new guest.

My dog hates the homeless. We were out walking him years ago and this kinda shabby looking guy ask if he can pet him. The guy draws him in close and starts hugging him. The dog starts freaking out, I'm telling the guy to let the dog go, finally the dog bites him and he turns my hound loose.

Ever since he starts growling whenever he sees a homeless guy.

Funny, I have an 80 lb Chocolate Lab that's fully trained off-leash - we walk everywhere together and most people are truly fascinated that a PROPERLY trained dog can do this. However, I have DEFINITELY noticed black people being absolutely freaked at the sight of us coming down the sidewalk. Some will cross the street to get out of our way.

My dog is totally socialized, well-mannered and trained - and I'm almost hyper-sensitive to peoples acceptance of dogs so the leash is at the ready at all times - on command. My guess is that some or all of the black people we encounter (very few) are accustomed to dogs in a different light and neighborhood - perhaps untrained pit bulls and rotties are what they see and very aggressive (we live/walk in a very affluent white-bread area near the beach in South Florida - and sometimes walk along PGA Boulevard where we might encounter people trying to catch the local bus) Funny, but it's pretty sad that they might associate dogs that way.
