Burl and I went up to annapolis the other day and picked up my nonrunning fj62 on Sunday. I got it to barely run and think the 8+ month old gas may be the reason for its struggling idle. its got about half a tank in it and I'm wondering, where does one dispose of 12 gallons of gasoline (responsibly;))

Its in winchester if that helps......

Check your local recycling center.

I take oil, coolant, brake fluid, old paint to the dump and they take it for free.

I don't know what they would say if I showed up with 12 gal. though, that is a lot. Check local regulations.

Yeah, i left a message with fredrick county waste management (or whatever they call themselves) so I guess I'll wait to hear back... I've brought coolant and chemicals to the dump here in FFX but I'm pretty sure they don't take gasoline. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm move it after its drained. I need to call the dealership to see if the gas tank recall has been done.. Maybe I could rig up a small temporary tank and drive to to the dealership for the replacement if it hasn't been done yet. Then they can dispose of it............

Re: Gas - Could you just keep the gas, mix it in with new gas and run it in a mower/weed eater, etc?

I know you can condition the gas and then use it on a mower but thats a lot of gas to hold onto.

Originally, the intent was to part it out and hold onto some goodies for myself..... That may still be what happens. But since its a pretty straight truck and rust isn't to horrible (even the undercarriage is pretty nice) I feel like I can give it a chance at a rebirth. When I go back out to mess with it in a week or so, I'll try some fresh gas, do a compression test and take it for a spin if it seems road worthy.

I'll either keep it for some DD use or sell it as a whole and make some cash on it if it runs well. If its not looking so good by the end of the day, it'll get stripped and parted:eek:.

As for price, I think I got a pretty good deal on it;)

I think the safest thing to do is to siphon the old gas into glass bottles and store them near a furnace somewhere.

Or, you know, the exact opposite of that.

I was talking to someone the other day about how I've always wanted to throw a molotov cocktail..... I guess its not bad for the enviroment if all the gas burns up...

With talks of mutiny (dave) you can never have enough molotov cocktails handy.....

The last time I had to mess with gas I took it to the landfill in Prince William. They take materials like that on Sat. and one other day during the week.
While your at it get me the vin number and I'll get Josh to run it at work to see if it's one of the 62's that had a gas tank recall. My daughter had a 62 about 4yr. ago and the gas tank started leaking, turned out the tank had never been replaced on a recall. Might be worth checking on. May get a new tank for a spare.

I think you could safely put 3or4 gallons in other cars with almost full tanks, with stabilizer added. Mike

open up the cap and smell it. if its only 8 month old you should be able to fill it up with new gas and it would help but only if you are going to start to drive it daily; if you are not drain it.

I think the local (Fredrick co.) landfill takes gas that's were I take my oil and antifreeze. (what the neighbor's cats do not drink)
I've got an electric fuel pump to pump the tank out if you need it.

nice find. looks to good to part out? ya going to keep it/ drive it.
need a hand let me know!

**just read the hole thred the gas tank in by parts cruiser at Burl's mom's holds gas and is out if it helps you can use it let me or burl know!

put an add on craigslist. someone will take it...

Also, It may have been sitting for longer than 8 months. that does not seem like a long time for gas to sit around.

I didn't really smell anything when I opened the gas cap door... there is no gas cap on it actually.

I will most likely sell it for small profit if I get it running well, otherwise I'll part it out. I would be interested in taking you up on your offer of the fuel tank. I can use it to transport the old gas to the landfill or whereever it turns out I'm supposed to take it.

I'll need to get the VIN and see if the tank was ever replaced.

If anyone is free next monday, I'll most likely be out tinkering with it in Winchester all day.

I've gotten the impression its pretty long... it runs really rough (no check engine light even!) and seems like fuel is the real issue. Everyhting minus the smog/ps belt seems to be there.

slam a couple cans of seafoam in acouple gallons of gas(new),and put the old in gas containers for disposal when you find the right/safe solution....if you part it out O need the gas tank filler neck...Peter

Glad to hear you got it running, I told you it would fire right up it's a landcruiser :grinpimp: Let me know if you need anything ;)

I wouldn't say it fired RIGHT up but with a little love and positive encouragement (cursing and cranking the starter).... she eventually came around. I'll be heading back out on Tuesday morning to work on it if you're around and want to drop by. So far I've put a battery, radiator hose, and some fluids in her. I'm willing to replace the exhuast, belt, and PS pump if it'll idle well with some fresh gas on tuesday, otherwise, let the parting begin:skull::skull::frown:

Worked on it the other day and its running really well. I'm not sure if I did the compression test correctly, but I think so. Seemed to be between 125 and 140 across all cylinders. Not purfect, but not horrible. Idles really well and drove around the driveway well.. I didn't drain the tank, I just dumped in some octane booster and it seemed to do the trick. I left it idling for over an hour with no issue. The rear seal seems to have a prety good leak though

Looks like it may be a keeper or I might sell it or trade it for something.... Nw I must find a good PS pump and pulley...

Andrew I have a siphon, you can take the gas to the dump on Saturdays. They have a special area that accepts hazardous chemicals.

But I'd fill it with new gas and drive it until empty then fill it will fresh fuel add some fuel system cleaner and let it ride.
