...this past spring I sold my 93 FZJ80. I did so in hopes of using my 98 Audi as my awd daily driver. However after I had a tbelt service on it, I found out my mechanic didn't change the one one time use crank bolt when my crank gear sheered off my block. Why oh why did I sell my Cruiser??? At the time it was bc I was averaging 8mpg and my Audi averaged 26mpg.

So I was out a vehicle, and I wanted something with 4wd so I picked up a 99 Isuzu Trooper. It was great except for the body rust until the first time I used it for towing and my trans went out. Now I've been driving a truck with only 1st and 2nd gear for a while waiting for the right Cruiser to come up again.

Now my wife and I just had our first baby, so I don't want to buy something that I wish was better...so I'm looking around for an 100 instead of an 80. I finally found one in my lower price range, however it has body rust, as most of them do here in the mid west. Should that be my biggest deterrent? The truck has fairly low miles, and I'm super impulsive to buy right now. How fixable is body rust on these trucks?

Dude stay the frick away from rust... there are plenty of pretty nice rust free 98-99-2000-2002 cruisers around the south... memphis nashville birmingham little rock atlanta texas ect... nice trucks in the $10k range
hell i'd ride a bus for a day to get one if it were to mean I didn't have to deal with rust... hit craigslist for any of these cities
The only regrets I've EVER heard from a cruiser owner is when they parted ways with it

It's rust, rust sucks, but you are getting a pretty great platform. I picked up a 100 a few months ago with some rust spots on the roof and a couple here and there on the body. Could not be happier. The thing drives and runs fantastic. High miles but nothing I have found that cant be dealt with in the near future. I was looking for an 80 when I found the 100. Nothing like knowing how capable the rig is and still being able to drive down the highway at 80+ talking on the phone with the cruise on. I loved the 80s and it was hard to gut not having a solid axle but the driveability is night and day.

With a low budget and location in the rust belt a bit of the orange stuff may be unavoidable.

Folks outside of the rust belt would tell you they'd rather drive a rust free vehicle and never be caught dead in anything that has even a drop of rust on it. Folks that have lived in the rust belt long enough just take it in stride and deal with it. Rust isn't the end of the world, especially when you are trying to save cash.

Keep your eye on several areas you could get a cheap flight to. There are people here willing to check out trucks for others, myself included.

Keep in mind the big picture that any LC in that price range will need something, whether it be rust treatment, tires, TB, brakes, etc. Land Cruisers can be expensive to repair, fuel, and insure. Athough it may be heresy on a Land Cruiser forum, be sure you consider other AWD vehicles that are less costly to operate for your daily driver with a new family.

I have considered other vehicles. That's how I got my Isuzu trooper. I'm just very familiar wit the LC. I've had a 60 and 2 80s, and my dad's had 5 60s and currently drives a 100. Both of us have done lots of wrenching on each other's trucks over the years so that doesn't scare me. I've never fixed rust before so that's why I'm questioning it.

Type the words "vinegar" and "rust" into the youtube machine. Mind. Blown.

True words. Words to live by. There's a 40-series out there that I used to own. Regrets that I didn't listen to the Mudders that told me not to sell it.

Find another Cruiser. Stay away from rust. Buy said Cruiser. Never sell it. Ask to be buried in it.
