ok, i've spent all day on the pwer steering pump and i give up. the back bolt is finally loose after severly comprising the integrity of both a box end and a flare wrench, but it's too f^%$$#% long to get out. it won't go back far enough to pull the pump past it (like you have to do with the two front bolts that get blocked in by the pulley. i quit!!! the old crappy pump stays on and can leak all over the smog pump!

i've pondered selling the 60...this is making that decision much easier!!!

what do you think it's worth? a 1983 60 with custom 4 1/2" alcan springs, hi steer, custom heavy duty tie rod and drag link with 80 series ends, 33x10.5 bfg's, 4.11 gears, aussie locker in the rear, custom sliders, arb front bumper with ramsey winch, custom rear tire carrier, class III hitch, tuffy console, cb, sony stereo with 10 disc changer, very good interior, non us slider windows, just over 117,000 original miles, needs power steering pump resealed, has typical rear wheel well rust, a couple of small spots on inside left door (pinholes) and front left wheelwell. small crease on left quarter panel...right quarter is crushed and needs to be replaced or a lot of time with the slidehammer. very unmolested engine/emissions/wiring wise, always serviced using oem parts, newer oem water pump (2 years ago), new oem fuel pump (last summer) and filter, complete history since i've had it (74,000 miles and five years or so).

remove the whole bracket from the engine...

And after you get it all apart, make sure you cut that back bolt down a bit.
I could not believe that the Toyota engineers missed that one, but a few seconds on the grinder and you'll have angst free power steering pump removal for the rest of your long and happy cruiser relationship.

Rusty, broken frame, dead engine, or bad electrical mojo all potential offing reasons. PS pump, never!

Do you have/have access to a 1/2" air wrench? I replaced the PS pump with a Beck Arnley rebuild but don't remember any great difficulty. Take Al's advice & if that doesn't work PM your buddies in the front range. Don't let it beat ya!

easier said than done. i've declared this weekend and every memorial day weekend from here on out...kick a japanese engineer weekend.

one more try to get this pos fixed, then it goes up for sale. if i don't get bites, it will sit out next to the garage until next november when it's eligible for collector plates and i can get rid of the f'n smog pump and all the b.s. that is blocking access to most everything or i feel the urge to part it out. the last 12 months, the 60 and my 40 have pissed me off so one or both will go on the chopping block.

that said, here are pics. located in denver

stop being such a weenier;) :flamingo:

if it pisses ya off that much just let it sit for a while and then come back to it. When I switch out the pump I just remove the whole bracket. I toasted another one in the rocks 2 weekends ago, Its pissing all over the place. I need to calll C-Dan for a new one....you will be sorry one day when its gone just cause your ticked now.

just chill sissta....listen to some reggae

Don't do it!! I've cussed mine plenty, but days like today when she ran every hard line I tried and dominated the CJ I was running with, make up for the tough times.

I had the same problem with mine. You can try loosening the last couple of bolts on the exhaust manifold and push the push the #1 cylinder exhaust manifold toward the back ot the engine.

I also had some luck with wiggling the bolt. I use a pair of long needle nose pliers (actually I have some 12" long hemostats) and grap the shaft of the bolt. pull it away from the power steering pump and hold is perpendicular to the hole. wiggle the pump, wiggle the bolt. You don't think it's going to come out, but then all of a sudden, the pump pulls out, easy as pie. At least that's what happened with mine.

It's little chit like this that keeps me from installing my new pump. That and not having a garage to work in or another car to use should the wag stay down longer than expected.

I know, I'm a wuss.:o

Have a  and revise your plan of attack.

Hang in there, Nuclearlemon, it's worth it!

LOL!!! oh now that's funny..... I'll send you the evil curse/death hex I put on that same engineer when I wrestled with mine. :D

It is a major PITA to get out and I can't offer any other tricks than those posted previously, but don't sell your beastie out of frustration -- she looks like a keeper :D

You'll get it, just keep at it ;)

Ige -
Colorado just repealed the smog test law. They'll keep the roadside drive-by test to tag gross polluters.

Pull the smog crap & install aftermarket fuel injection!

I couldn't get the back bolt out either. Also couldn't figure out how to remove the bracket from the block. What I ended up doing was using a file to take off the lip on the top of the bolt. Made the bolt head thinner, so that it would move back far enough to remove the PS pump. It took about 45 minutes with a sharp file. Not hard, just a little tedious.

Don't sell.

You could also file clearance into the exhaust manifold. Or even unbolt the last manifold elbow and slide it into the manifold a little further to get that last bolt. Or just hack saw the head off the bolt between the pump and the bracket and pull the remains outa the pump. Or crank it back in, saw off on the pump side to shorten and THEN remove as normal.

Or go have a Jack 'n Coke and ferget the whole deal for a day or week like the rest have said. Cruise the 40 topless (the truck not you...:D ) for a week or two.

Nick
