I found my odd smoke problem that i thought was caused by a spill of seafoam.
seems some of the "caulk-like" material toyota uses between the truck panels, you know, the white stuff that looks like phenoseal, but usually painted?
anyway...there must be some used in the area by the firewall, or under the hood insulation, because i found this sitting on the manifold by the air-rails. pretty melted and cracked.
i got to take off the air cleaner assebly and wipe clean whatever is stuck under there, and re-attatch my insulation.
what a PITA..and it still smells, so this isnt the only piece.
if its not one thing, its another, but i did order my wet okole seat covers today!

Funny thing is, I've found some of that same exact stuff here and there in my engine compartment. Had no idea where it came from or what it was. I'll definitely keep a closer eye out for that stuff when pokin' around the engine!

Glad you found the problem. I was curious what was causing that!

Under the hood insulation there's a metal stiffener which has a good bit of that filler.

What's a good non-corrosive replacement for that filler? I've found bits n' pieces occasionally when working on my engine, but haven't pulled off my underhood insulation yet. I plan to do it soon now though, and i'd like to replace any lost filler if it needs to be done before I put on the hoodliner I got from Dynamat.

hood liner

spook,
tell me more about the hood liner from dynamat. does it attatch with the same plastic rivets?
where did you get it, did it have to be cut from a larger piece, or did it come already made for your truck?

It's a sort of tar/foam combination that insulates heat and sound from getting through the hood. It's got a heavy adhesive backing, but I guess for appearance's sake you could press the factory rivets through (I wouldn't). It's got a thick foil layer on the non-adhesive side that reflects heat back into the engine compartment so it can be blown out instead of damaging the paint on the hood. I don't really think heat damage on the hoods is as much an issue with our trucks as it would be with a muscle car or other big block, but hey, every little bit helps. It's gotta be cut from a large piece, but IIRC when I measured, there is very little that needs to get cut off. Here's Dynamat's page on it.

I'm still trying to find that filler stuff cause almost my entire stiffener assembly has been seperated from my hood's sheet metal
