I have been working a gentleman on purchasing a new Chevy for several months, who told me he drove a 2001 Land Cruiser that he purchased new. After several months of being a “no show”, he finally showed up. Long story short:
I am the proud owner of a 2001 LC

It came with the owners manual, 3 keys, and a file full of service records. I had my mechanic to check over and give me a list of the bad:

1. Exhaust leak - could be gasket or cracked manifold. Anyone know which it usually is on a 2001? Seems to be a major job just getting to it to see which one

2. Front axles are spitting grease

3. Front PS speaker and DS cargo speaker needs replaced

That is all!! Other than a few cosmetic issues, this truck does not look like a 17 year old vehicle.
This LC was only used for traveling the highways and lived until the last couple years in Raleigh.
Anyone know this truck?

Lt1fire recommended replacing heater Tees but found a receipt where was replaced in 2013, They do look good as do the hoses.
I plan on leaving the truck stock and enjoying the comfort of the Corinthian leather seats :bounce::bounce2:
We shall see but any recommendations will be appreciated.

Congratulations! The exhaust leak is usually a crack in the manifold. doug thorley makes headers, or the crack can be rewelded. the labor is the pain. it will be a tick sound, that may go away when the engine is warmed up.

Glad you finally posted it up.

100s do get cracked manifolds quite often..... good news is DT headers are the answer and also a bump in power.

A good list of things to check off that beno sent me.

1. TBelt/pump and associated front end pulleys and hoses. Thermostat/gasket

2. Front and rear sway bat links and bushings.

3. Plugs and fuel filter. Air filter. PCV valve and grommet and oil filter.

4. Front, center, rear diff fluids.

5. Front axle bearing repack. Check brake pads and rotors all the way around.

6. Drain and flush radiator and heater cores.

7. Besides the heater Ts, replace all 6 hoses.

8. Inspect and adjust parking brake.

9. Grease driveshafts. Check for play in UJs.

10. Check steering rack for leakage.

11. Check CVs for leakage.

12. Inspect upper and lower ball joints and front and rear suspension bushings for cracking.

13. Brake fluid swap.

14. PS fluid swap.

15. Fxxxing wheel the fxxx out of that fxxxer.

To baseline

Luckily you didnt get the weak front diff like I did.

You did not purchase those parts from me. We have never done business after I left the dealer world, Al. (over 3 years ago now)

That's just the list of things to check or do you sent me or posted up somewhere.

Most of that 3 years I was cruiserless and someone (Turkish guy I think) told me last year when I bought my 100 that amazon was the best to get filters unless it was a big order. Thankfully haven't needed a big order yet. ;)

All of those things other than some fluids were done before my purchase .

Oh and the T's

I was hoping the exhaust leak was just a gasket...
Thanks for the list Yeti. I will start with the fluid changes and work my way through the list. Brakes have been checked and are excellent all the way around. DT headers are something I will have to look into...the exhaust leak makes it sound like a tractor on takeoff.

The axles may just need new boots or clamps. I've still got my clamp kit from Pfran that I ordered before I realized the fluid was actually from the rack and pinion.

Side note @beno can you still get toyota refurbished racks? That I will be ordering from you when this one goes out completely.

Refurbished racks are useless in a Land Cruiser. They do not last very long and do not stand up to usual LC use by this crowd. I recommend the correct new iteration from Toyota (manufactured by Toyoda Industries//JTEKT). The reman ones are either remanned in Mexico, Texas, or Michigan. None fit my criteria for quality workmanship.

44250-60050 for the rack assembly. Also, don't forget to change out the steering grommet on the RH side (45517-60010). This is also a good time to replace the TRE's if they are leaking, have damaged boots, or show signs of play or damage. They are, of course, attached to the ends of the rack.

Sometimes you have to remove the oil filter adaptor housing/cooler to remove rack. You might want the oil cooler oring and the oil filter housing gasket on hand just in case.

Sweet

@alk747triodad sorry for the hijack

@beno got that number written down. I'll be calling you as soon as the current one calls it quits.... funny thing is it drives fine just leaks a bit... thought there would be a little more play after a year of it.

Hijack off

Congrats!!! Looks awesome.

If it is leaking at the pressure port, just try a 44327-30030 for $2 and see what happens. If it leaking elsewhere, then there are other issues.

does it sound like this??

Patrick posted this up when he first bought his 100

Exhaust Manifold Leak

Yes!

I will go do the hearing test on the fender or drive by a wall to see which side the leak is on. I am not going to be in a big hurry to fix but will get around to it once I get the "more" important fixes done.

Nice.... for now go on amazon and put the DT headers for the 100 in your shopping cart or your save for later. I just realized this will alert you when there is a price change. It would have helped a few weeks ago when they dropped $300 in price for a day. I put them in my save for later that very day.

Damn Sam.... that's pretty nice....

Maybe we should have a deal where the person (non business) who owns the most, different Land Cruisers wins a year's free membership :)
