I was thinking about going with a lock rite locker. It was recommended. I could use any other recommendations you might have. The real question is, who has already done it and likes what they have done? also part #s would really help me. thanks guys

Welcome to MUD!

Aussie Locker is a do it yourself locker similar to the Lock Rite. I assume you are putting it in the rear?

ARB, Detroit, Ox and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few make lockers for FJ40's. If you go with a complete ring and pinion set while you install the locker, make sure you install the fine spline. Yours is a course spline now but it really depends on the type of wheeling you do.

I have a detroit in the rear of my 40 and an ARB in the front. No complaints. I have a Lock Rite in the rear of my CJ-8 and the clicking bugs me.

Hey thanks for the info, i still dont know how to navigate this site well yet this is my first post so i just got your message after my second post. I wasnt aware that it would click. The detroit doesnt. I use my fj as a daily driver so what do you recommend?

are you talking about the lockrite?

I just wanted something that would help me climb. Does your detroit click? I havent put much thought into replacing the pinion or putting in fine spline. I guess that you recommend the fine spline. thanks

I can't help with recommendations specific to a 40, but your choices are either an autolocker (lockrite, aussie, detroit) or a selectable (ARB, OX, etc.). Which one you go with depends on vehicle and available funds. The autolockers are the cheapest option, but are less street friendly and require you to make adjustments to your driving, like coasting around corners with the clutch in. They can also be downright scary on icy roads. Selectable lockers give you the best of both worlds, but come with higher costs and complexity.

If the rig isn't a daily driver, the autolocker is a good compromise. I have an aussie in the rear of my mini and I like it, but it's not a daily driver.

As Bob said, Aussie or detroit is a cost effective locker that works really well off road but on the street you will get annoyed by it. Turning into a parking stall and the rear axle will bind a little then you will hear click click click click click and sometimes a bang. Installation is easier for you as well... just remove the rear inspection plate and you are in there.

Aussie

I just put an Aussie in the rear of mine last wkend. I kind'a took a different route than most. I bought 2 FJ 60 front 3rds, which gave me 3.70 gears for the hiway, fine spline pinions, and less wear than my '77 3rds have. An SM 420 is in the future for my low gear option. After installing, I drove it to work this week to get a feel for how it would handle. Since I used a front 3rd in the rear for the Aussie install, all my clearances that you check as you go allong, were on the min side. I've only heard the cliking a few times, had it lurch to the side a couple times when making a tight turn into a parking space, but really noticed the tourqe steer when gassing on it going thru the gears. I had read on Mud where someone had added limited slip fluid to his, and a buddy hadn't, and he didn't have near the popping and banging his buddy did. When I filled mine up I used that " trick ", so maybe it does make a difference. Good luck, Al

i JUST PUT A LOCRITE IN MY 72 FJ40, ITS NOT TOO BAD ON THE TICKING, AUSSIE TENDS TO BE BACK ORDERED. iT REALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE.
