hi this is my first post on IH8Mud.com.

My names Josh and live in Australia, I own a 2006 HZJ79R 1HZ engine 4.2L Diesel non turbo.

Lately the tilly has been hard to start at operating temp (it has 210,000kms), Cold starts it cranks over in half a second, but hot it can take up to 4-5 seconds. It does not blow any white smoke, just a little black puff on start up no lost power or excess fuel consumption...

Injectors have been cleaned and tested,
Brand new Glowplugs installed and working,
Brand new Cranking battery
all Electrical Circuitry is checking ok
there is no air in fuel line
Both Fuel Filters have been replaced.

I have Blanked off my EGR as I had trouble with Carbon Build up, Could this be affecting this?

could the timing be out on the injector pump?

also, is there a gauze filter in the banjo bolt on injector pump for this model?.. if clogged up would it have this affect?

I appreciate any suggestions, thanks heaps.

First off prime the fuel system or install a clear hose from filter to IP this ensures you have no air in system.
We just spent time this week with a Merc not starting and after all sorts of Diagnostic tools where hauled out the simple fix was using your body weight via a boot on prime pump to get her to fire up.

In with the gauze filter is your fuel solenoid.
Since she starts up when cold my second suspect would be the fuel solenoid and or its wiring as heat does funny things.
If/when you get to the filter be sure to test the solenoid and better yet remove it from equation for testing.
Be sure to test the solenoid while the engine is hot.

The gauze filter is under the solenoid valve. I think you will be pulling the injector pump out and rebuilding it, it may be sucking air throught the frount seal or the feed pump has given up the go.
