How do I remove the thick upper part of the gear lever? When I try to turn it, it twists back and forth slightly, like it's got a rubber sleeve or something. How do I dismantle without damaging it?

you dont, its vulcanized rubber isolated. the dust boot is streatched over the ball for install, a large castration ring plyer works a treat for that and other similar jobs, like o-ring installs ect.

Righto, thanks, that should work fine.

How do you remove the steel spring retainer collar? Or are Terrain Tamer selling impossible parts?

you push it down and turn it a bit,,,, they have a tool for it but ive always been able to do it by hand

Add to Rhino
Put shifter in neutral. Turn collar counter clockwise 1/4 turn. Pops out easy

Only 3sp transmissions in old FJ40 kinda need the tool.

As Rhino said the shaff is permabonded. It does NOT COME APART.

Unacrew the metal spring after you pull the plastic (white) cup.

Not a rocket science job.

The diameter of the permabonded gear lever that does not come apart, is 36mm

The diameter of the ball part of the gear lever, is 37mm.

The hole in the steel collar, is 27mm.

The steel collar is in-between the two bits that are bigger than it.

I'm hopeful the rubber boot will stretch, as described above. But I don't think the steel collar will stretch.

So it may not be rocket science, but can you tell me how it comes off? Because obviously I'm no rocket scientist and I'm missing something?

Or, are Terrain Tamer selling impossible parts?

Not to overstate the obvious here, but why not just buy a new shifter? This is not an obscure part and you can replace it for about 100 bucks.

1992-1999 HZJ75 H55 33530-60210

That is assuming you have an H55.

If you have an R151:

2009 HZJ79 R151 33530-60460 (supersedes to 33530-60461)
2012 HZJ79 R151 33530-60740 (supersedes to 33530-60471)

Might be a subtle difference in shape, but both are listed for the R151

70 series H15x 33530-60730

Make it easy.

The rubber is bonded to a sleeve which is pressed onto the part of the shifter that holds the parts in question.

So, maybe impossible parts.

I wanted to raise my shifter ball and did so by sliding that sleeve up a bit, I suppose you could remove that then press it back on.

Because I don't need a new shifter.

The transmission is out to fit a new clutch. To remove the transmission, I had to remove the shifter. When I removed the shifter, I found the rubber dust boot needed replacing. So I bought a new one.

I thought I might as well replace the plastic seat, and plastic tip, so bought the kit from Terrain Tamer. As the kit contained this steel collar that is seemingly impossible to replace, made me think the top of the gear lever may be removable. Turns out it's not. Which is fine. I'll stretch the rubber boot out to slide it over, and won't replace the steel collar.

But being told is not a rocket science job, just made me question how I can do it, seeing it's supposedly so simple.

Righto, thanks for the info. I don't think I will go to that extreme, but thanks for the suggestion.
