Hello, me (Matt) and my girlfriend (Alex) are travelling around the United States and later we wanna go to South America as well.
We shipped our Toyota Landcruiser HZJ75 from Switzerland to Halifax and we are now in Cody, Wyoming.
Today we filled up the car with diesel and right after that the car started to run unsmooth and there was a lot of white smoke coming out the exhaust. So we thought, that we might have filled in bad diesel and we let drain the whole tank filled in other diesel. But the problem is still there, the engine doesn't run proper and there is still white smoke. If we drive faster it's better (we almost notice nothing), but when start in first gear the engine does like bucking or jerking (sorry, not sure about the correct expression).
So maybe something with the injection system is not good!

Do you guys know a good mechanic for Toyota diesel cars near Cody, WY.

Thanks for your answers.
I changed the fuel filter, but the old one look really clean to me and we still have the same problem after changing.
And I don't think that the altitude is the problem either because yesterday we drove over than 8000 feet and it ran very smooth.
It just started smoking after we filled up diesel.

I occasionally see this too with my 13bt. Only happens after filling up for a solid 15 seconds then it dissipates until next full up

Im wondering if you have an air leak, why it happened after you filled up, I dont know.

Does it start easy when cold?

While its idling, try pump the hand pump on the fuel filter, see if it makes a difference
Also try refitting the filter, that a common place to leak air into the system..
I would also bleed the fuel system. If that doesnt work , connect a piece of clear plastic between the filter and injection, watch for bubbles.

Water in the fuel? Swapping the diesel might not fix the problem especially if it's the same batch of diesel. You would have to drain the water seperator thingo (name gone from me atm).

Is it a dual tank model?

Its called the water seperator but these dont have them. They have the water sensor at the bottom of the primary filter.
Maybe there is a big puddle of water at the bottom of his fuel tank?

Yep ok thats good to know. My 2h 40 had one so i presumed that a 70 would as well.

Diesel is lighter than water so the water should be at the bottom of the tank. Higher speeds demands more fuel so would explain why it would clear up. Hope that helps

My 75 came from Australia with an aftermarket water separator fitted. Even if they're not factory installed, might be worth checking if someone has fitted one to this truck.

Also if they drained the tank with the plug at the bottom of the tank I doubt it has water pooled at the bottom. But if they siphoned it, that could be the issue.

Hi, thank you very much for your help

Yes we have a second diesel filter (Separ). At the moment I did not change this filter. But I wanna do it as a next step.

It does start easy when cold.

They syphoned the diesel out of the tank, so there si maybe some water left at the bottom.

Today we got another diesel additiv and we put some of it in our tank and then drove about 100miles.
But the car is still not running smooth and still a lot of white smoke.

Here's what i would do.
Find an outboard motor priming bulb from somewhere, and a length of hose.
Pop the fuel line that runs from the filter in your engine bay to the injector pump off at the filter. connect the bulb to the end of this.
Get a jar, water bottle or whatever you have around. Stick some good diesel in it, and put the end of your bulb hose in that. Prime it with the bulb, start the engine. See how it runs.

This will separate problems in your fuel delivery system from the engine - then you can properly troubleshoot working backwards methodically from there.

If it runs fine using the method above then you know the problem is in your fuel lines, filter(s) or tank.
Change all your filters, drain the tank properly - I think most 70's have a proper drain plug in the bottom of the tank - you'll never get it all out with a siphon.

I wouldn't mess about with additives untill you've sorted the lines, tank and ALL your filters.
