Hello!

Thinking of buying a HZJ73 from 1999.

Some of my wonderings;
§ Does it have ABS-brakes?
§ Dumb question I guess, but how about airbag?
§ Are there AC?
§ Does all HZJ73 have the same standard equipment?

How are these in comfort, compared with 90-series?

/Best regards, Mattias

i my hzj73 is a 1991 no air bag,got ac (ice cold) no abs ,nice tintin picture by the way,im pretty sure that the one your looking for is the same.very good truck just buy it and welcome into the 70 family, were all brother and sister.

sorry as for the confort,i never sit in a 90 serie but im conftable but how tall are you... to be honnest im 5foot 9 inch and its limit.if you are taller you may not like the way the seats are configure, they are on suspention but almost all 70 guy modified them to get a couples of inch to the back.were not japanese poeple .you will found a couple of tread on how to do so.watch for rear seatbelts coz most of hzj73 frp top dont have them.good luck dont be shy if you got other questions.

Ive never been in a 90 but I have done quite a few klms in a 95 series (5 dr) and they are more comfortable but seem smaller inside than a 73 for sure .
However after many klms on bad roads the 9* series will get annoying dash squeaks and rattles.

I also owned a 1988 73 series for 7 years and they will still be like new at 200000klms if you do the maintenace.

You need to work on them and choose the right springs ,shocks and A/T tyres to get the best ride.
Big lifts tend to destroy the on road handling.

The 73/74 series come in a few trim levels but basically they are either auto or manual,a/c or no a/c,lockers or none, sunroof occasionally, diesel, turbo diesel and petrol.

Low spec models have vinyl floors(nothing wrong with that) and non metallic paint(preferable)

The 7* series got airbags in 06

My HZJ73 is a 1991
it has 480000 km's on it.
Second 1HZ now with turbo.
Its rolly on the road, the motor is noisey when driveing, A/C is great, no airbags and i love it:D
If you buy one get it turboed. Loads of power
All in all there great trucks a bit rough with 4 corner leafs But great.

5 ft 9 inches the limit eh?
i am 6 ft 3 inches and have yet to modify the 70 series seats for leg room... interesting. (and they are my daily drivers)

i'm 6'5 and my BJ74 has plenty of leg room for me. And I have modified other vehicles in the past for more leg room, but see no need with any of the 70 series I have driven.

crusher, your the best.it is my daily driver to but on a 9 hour drive i really think that is limit.but if you said so,must belive you, theres god and theres crusher.

Any drive in a vehicle for 9 hours is enough

i'll top all of you
i'm 6'7"

my dad complains on road trips with the amount of room but I think its fine.
as for the backset, i wouldn't want to be back there at all.

Im about 6.2 but another inch or 2 legroom would be nice.I find a nice hard piece of upholstery foam lifts you up and away from the pedals just enough to make it bearable on those long runs.

The 73/74 seem to have just a little more room than the 75,maybe its because the seat can recline a little more.

If you are doing 9 hours in standard 70 series seats, bin them and get some decent aftermarket seats.

IMO the HZJ73 is a pretty supreme truck. The 1HZ is a wicked engine and is a huge step up from the B Series.
a 73 is not as small as a 70 when it comes to tight tree trails and manovoring. But you do have the added room which a 70 lacks. I choose having the room.

Anyone know if the HZJ71s are SWB or MWB?

A BJ or HZJ71 is short

Being 5'8'' ,you take notice when being on the shorter side is a big plus, especially when your in the back:D

I once slept in the back of a honda civic, not the back seat but in the hatch, oh and there were 3 other people in the car as well:flipoff2:

A HZJ71 is SWB with coil front, same as a HZJ74.They are the equivalent to the 78/79 series LWB year for year.

i have been eyeing a HZJ70 ragtop but can't bring myself to dropping the coin.

hzjoe, i have driven many different rigs for long durations. for me it isn't the leg room that kills me, it is the support the seat give my back. the ford van, ford 3/4 ton truck were the worst by far. a couple hours and my back began to hurt. the dodge tow vehicle bench seat was very comfortable. the Mits Strada and Pajero were comfortable enough for the long haul and the Land Cruiser seats are very nice for the long run.

a supra seat installed in a Cruiser is a nice addition though.

but the most comfortable ever was the stock split bench in the old very early 70s 40 series. those coil sprung seats were unbelievably comfortable, supportive (WAY more comfortable than the spring suspension seats of the 70 series) and best of all you could pull over, wind down the far window, stick your feet out and sleep like you were in your own bed at home.
to be honest, i would love to find a set in good condition and install them into the 70 just for s***s and giggles.

I figured so, just thought I would ask

I slept diagonally in the bj70 for a few nights camping. My dad used to do shutdowns and he would have a peice of plywood running from the backdoor on top of his tool box onto the dashboard. Being 6'7" you just fit.

I can handle the lack of leg room. The bj70 had more room for the driver comparing to the hzj73. You used to be able to stretch your left leg completely out. I agree with crushers though, i get back cramps more than anything, I cram my lankey ass into a playboat for god sakes i can handle no foot room.

Mattias,
are you sure this is a recent picture?
Allthough it looks as if it has a non Dutch licenceplate this must be an old picture.
Or is it just an example of the kind of rig you want to buy?

This rig belonged to a friend of mine (you even can read his name just below the mirror) and he totalled his rig over a year ago.
(You can see him in his rig on a trip to the Kola Peninsula we did in 2005, as an example see THESE pages.)
He stopped on a hilltop, forgot to apply the parking brake, left the rig and it rolled down a hill for about 300 meters before crushing nose on into a firm tree, a very firm tree.
He has allways been very keen on his rig and wanted to keep it but it was really beyond repair, he told me. I never saw the rig after his mishap.
AFAIK he sold the remains to a s*c*rap yard. Bought another one.
If you want to buy it, get it well inspected !!!
