Hi all,

I have recently purchased a 98' HZJ105, 5 Speed manual with part time 4wd.

I am have 2 problems at the moment:

1) the transfer case lever seems to be stuck. Only works from H2-H4, can't left up to pull to N & L4.

2) there is a central diff lock switch, factory. Not sure if the part time 4wd version is equipped with this.

Thanks

Check out lcool.org , a lot of info for your model there, AFAIK the switch is not original as part time didn't use it IIRC.

Hey Airman, I just got one too! A 2002 HZJ105 and the other day was trying 4WD for the first time and I couldn't get it to 4Lo either. I yet havent found the way. My thought is that it was just hard because of lack of use by previous owner. If you find out, would you let me know as well?

Thanks a lot!

Hi guys and gals,

I thought I would chime in as I recently bought a '99 105 with the same issue. Bare in mind I am not a mechanic though.

I've had success by getting under the car with a brush and some Wd40 and follow the gear stick from underneath all the way through its linkages and make sure they all have some movement and are free from gunk. Give the whole area a liberal coating of wd40 focussing (at least for my car) near where it joins the rubber boot. Then back up into the car and select low.

Also when you are trying to lift up, apply pressure pulling the stick to the left and rear. I also did a transfer case oil change which is really simple and it made a huge difference with the smoothness of the gears.

Once it goes in to Low I try and exercise it every day or two until it is proving reliable. Then it's jut maintaining from there.

I hope some of this might help.

Hi BJ40man, I've been told by some mechanics and Toyota service station that very high chances that the lever mechanism is rusted. However, I have not yet pulled apart the 4wd selector to check.

Cut open the carpet, unbolt the metal cover, you then will see the lever mechanism.

Total 4 bolts

Flood the hole with WD40, problem solved.

Things to take note:

1. the gear & 4wd lever rubber coat is pretty aged, so be careful when you remove and install it.

2. there are actually 2 rubber layers, so make sure you align the 3 holes (1 metal cover, 2 rubber covers)

3. don't do things that can damage the gear level.

4. be careful with the plastic dash.
