I searched and came up with some answers but not exactly what I was looking for.

I am in the process of finding a solution for getting gauges for a 1hz. They are in 40 series trucks so there is no stock tachometer handling and therefore I need to find a gauge that will work with the signal coming from the pump on the HZ. Optimally, I want to get a small gauge like a tiny-tach that can also show temp and other information without having my dash look like a plane cockpit.

So does anyone know the tach signal I am looking for? Is it one pulse per revolution or something completely different. For all I know it is a resistance thing so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Couldn't you just go for an after market tach that gets it signal from the fuel injection pulse on the injector lines, or the flywheel type or the alternator?
If you dont want to use the 7* series 1HZ tacho, it is easier to bypass the stock pick up sensor all together.

I didnt read the posts linked here but I could never get anything to work with the IP signal besides a stock HZ/HD tach. I have done a few 60 HD conversions using a dakota digital processor with a VDO pickup connected to a stock gas tach. I dont see why that wont work on a 40. You have to drill and tap the bellhousing for the VDO pickup.

I have a tiny tach Im not going to use any time soon if its useful for you.

Any pics of where you drilled for the pickup on the 1HZ bellhousing?
Do you know of an alternative to the VDO pickup that doesn't require drill/tap of bellhousing, i.e. get the signal from alternator or some other source?
Did you use the stock bellhousing pickup from the 60 series or an aftermarket pickup? I'm in the same boat as the OP - I have 1984 HJ47 troopy with 1HZ-T. I still have the stock tach and didn't tap the bellhousing (yet).

(hijack over :))

I used a vdo pickup. It was the simplest known way to implement the dakota digital processor.

Maybe call dakota and ask them. There are aftermarket tachs that use a magnetic pickup. You have to place a magnet on the crank pulley or the flywheel. Perhaps the dakota unit can work with something like that.

I probably have pics. You actually just have to put a hole through and use the jam nuts with the vdo sensor to place it. There is no good place on the bellhousing that will allow a threaded hole. looking at the back of the engine the mounting position I used is about 7 o'clock.
