Won't be installed until April along with the SAS, but I have a Trail Gear in the garage. Arms are beefy, forged tool steel I believe, machined on the arm to knuckle interface and in the tapered counterbores. 80 series TRE's. I also ponied up $100 for FROR's ARP knuckle/arm studs.

Aren't you trying to sell the p/u?

Well, I got the tie rod hung up on a BFRock and bent it upwards pretty bad. It's supposed to look like an inverted U, right? ;) I've been intending to do the crossover steering mod for a while now, just had to have an excuse. Thanks for the Trail Gear info, too.......I'll check them out.

Am I 'trying' to sell the truck? Not really.......no FS signs, no advertising, just word of mouth, friends, and Mud. I haven't even put it in the vehicles FS section here. I'm kind of at a crossroads......keep it for my 8 yo daughter and keep building on it or sell it and take a big loss?

When I install the 4.88's, I'll probably throw in ARBs or Aussie lockers, too. It only makes sense to do it all at once, doesn't it?

Yep, agreed. I'm going with the elockers myself, have the taco one in the back and should have a hipinion this weekend. What size tires are you running on the mini? I'm debating on 4.88's vs 5.29's...

Currently 31X10.5X15 BFG ATs and can run in 5th on the highway. For trail running I have a set of 33X9.5s I put on, but I don't like them on the hwy. 4.88s will run 33's and 5.29s will handle 35's, right? If I keep the truck.......who knows where it will go from there.....it's a money pit, and I love modifying it.

Trail Gear's setup with IFS box and mount is $727, All Pro is $836. That's a good savings! I'm assuming the IFS steering box is necessary for clearance and geometry reasons?

That's my understanding on the IFS box. My runner is a 91 and had PS from the factory.

33's with 4.88's and 35's w/ 5.29's is traditional wisdom for 4cyl's. I've got the v-6 plus dual's so I can't decide. supposedly 5.29's are weak in the hi pinons, plus the back is already 4.88's so that would be an extra $300 to regear the rear.

Decisions, decisions. :D

All Pro (http://allprooffroad.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=17) vs.
4X4Labs (http://www.4x4labs.com/products/steeringarms.html)

Who's running which one? Pro's? Con's?? Opinions as to which one is better? All pro's setup is $399 and 4X4 Labs is $550.

I'm planning to install the crossover steering in my '85 mini DD and 4.88 gears this summer. Thanks for your input.

I was running 4x4 labs in my old landcruiser.... I am buying a set for both my 77fj45 and my 82 mini truck.

in my opinion, there are no other choices.....

(geez, I didnt even get paid to say that!!!)

i've got all pros on my 40...no issues. got two sets of all pro pickup arms that i bought used that i'm going to convert to use on the pig and the 60

Thanks for you input! It sounds like either is quite an improvement over stock steering. I'm working on a used PS box right now, so I guess I'd better get my sheeeet in gear. Thanks again!

i have the allpro one and i wouldnt recomend it unless your running there springs cuz it wont clear other springs i personally wish i would have gone with the marlin crawler one it has some beefy tie rods with it too.

The drop pitman arm on 85 and older solid axle trucks moves along the long axis of the vehicle -- front to back -- for the push pull steering. the IFS steering box moves the Pitman arm side to side. All the cross over steering goods wouldn't do squat with a solid axle steering box.

I've got Marlin Crawler's cross over kit in my shed waiting on some free time to be installed. I bought it many months ago and had a hard decision between it and the 4x4 Labs set up which I would have bought if price wasn't a consideration. I think all the primary Mini Truck aftermarket vendors (MC, All Pro, TG, Sky) have pretty comparable cross over kits and it really comes down to price and who's business you want to support.

I ran AllPro on my 85 xcab. I have Marlin on my 85 4Runner. I have 4x4Labs on my 40. Marlin has more beef on the arms. All are over built. Rod ends are the same, as are the tie rods and drag links. I'm sure Trail Gear is the same as one or the other.

You'll need to run a least 5" of lift with the 4x4 labs setup to clear the oil pan.

Also, just because the tie rod is behind the axle doesn't mean you can't hit it with a rock.

Don't ask how I know.

must be different on pickups....i'm running stock springs on my cruisers with no issues with clearance on the allpros.

That's a good explanation, thanks for the info!

The Marlin and All-Pro Hysteer setups for the minitrucks are similar. Both need about 3-4" of lift. The one from 4x4 labs runs the tierod behind the axle instead of in front and requires additional lift to avoid contact with the oil pan on the 4cyl motor.
