dude you could take the PUMP and off the LINES off and the RAM off and the truck will still steer.

You just wont have power steering, it will steer manually just fine.

Thats like saying it wont turn when the engine is off.

So you have not done it yet huh...
Go try it and learn.

I ran my FJ60 PS box around without a pump for a little while, just ran the out/in together to keep oil in it. Was easier to steer than my stock box. There is a mechanical link for your steering from the pitman to the input on the box. All I can say about the ram is if you have the lines reversed the ram will push it the opposite way and takes the steering wheel with it. I keep 2 -6 caps for the box in case I rupture a line and can't get it repaired.

What was the question again?

...What was the question again?

slightly modified, here it is- can I take apart a ram and put a spacer stop in it myself to make it 5"? I have 1 yes answer, I'm looking to confirm. or is it better to pay the extra $80 and have west tx off road do it

no question, I will run a 5" or less ram, it will stop before the box or axle stops hit the end. so at this point, how it works is moot.:D

So was mine the "yes" answer???

:D

I also said "yes"

limit it internally or externally (external is much easier IMO) and if you get it wrong you can tweek it with an allen wrench and not have to disassemble the ram.

Putting a limit block in as easier than porting your own box.

Either use a chunk of aluminum solid stock. (leftover 7075 link bar endcuts work well).

Drill it out and cut it to the length needed to limit the ram properly.
I have also used white plastic. The tough white stuff at my local plastic supply house. Might be some kind of uhmv (?) Works well and is easy to cut/drill.

Depending on the rams design and assembly needs you can either take it apart and put it on the inside over the shaft or put it on the outside between the pin/heim jamnut/bolt and the end of the ram/cap.

I would look to see which surface is tougher and better suited to having contact with a limiting surface.

Be sure if going inside to not obstruct any of the fluid delivery ports with your stopper.

My post was a yes if you have the mechanical ability to port a box then you should have no problem doing the ram yourself.

But dont listen to me, Im sure everyone will find a reason why this is wrong.

I do what works for me, over and over. Not what the net thinks is good. Then I add my input to the net for all to mock/judge/add to.

Its your call. The people at the place you might send it to have it limited are just humans like everyone else and are not doing anything with their two hands that you cant do with the same hands.
(you do have 2 hands right? no offence, but I told george that he drove like a blind guy and found out later he had one eye).

If you have the tools, then do it.

ok, cool. I was thinking that internal was better. outside, the heim has less surface area hitting the spacer, but I haven't seen the inside of a ram yet. I know I have the ability/knowledge to work on a ram, but don't have many special tools. I guess that was more of my concern.

so looks like I should get off my duff and order a ram! thanks for everyone's input. I'll post up pics when I get working on it.

Just don't screw up the seal on the piston and you'll be fine :)

You can limit it externally with a piece of round stock in 5 minutes. Works great for me.
