Bought a 94 fj80 in Nov. took it on a couple trips, drove it @ 6k mi. One morning it starts making a loud tapping/clapping noise. Told it needs a valve adjustment and possibly new hydraulic lifters. Is this common or did I buy a lemon?

Did the noise die down after startup? Sounds like it could be the startup rattle. Do a search on that term. It's related to the timing chain.

Putting new hydraulic lifters in it is going to be a trick, they are cam on tappet design, no hydraulic lifters!:D Need more info, how many miles, is the noise only at start up, where on the motor is the noise coming from? It sounds like you need a new mechanic!

did it make a nasty noise at start that lasted for a few seconds? if so sounds like the common colst start rattle, ushually comes from the timing chain, if that is what it is then not really a big deal, lots of info about it in the archives.

Like Tools'r'us said, you need a new mechanic. If he can't figure out that your truck uses solid lifters, he shouldn't be working on it.

benjamin, why did you start this second thread on the same issue this morning? you got advice yesterday, including the advice that it does not have lifters. please try to stick to one post here for one issue so people do not waste their time repeating what you have already been told.

I would pay the chain slipper guide suspect as well. I have seen a few of them go in 93-94 LC's. Not a "common" problem I would say, but worth enough for Slee to have photo's and a write-up on his site about this. I believe its in the tech or newbie 80's buyer guide section. Check it out. As for the problem he is describing, a broken slipper would very well cause that noise. Good Luck!

The noise is definitely coming from the top of the motor, its worst when I first start it up and is does get louder as rpm increases. Also plenty of oil, no fluctuation of oil pressure. Mechanic i've used for years to service my work fleet told me this. I've never had any issues with his work but now you've got me worried.

94... broken chain slipper! They were redesigned after that I think.

Hey Rick, what do you think it is? There a a few more threads with the same problem, do you think you could check in there as well? :D
