Hunting down a electrical problem

Morning,
Can anyone steer me to the gound points for the wiring harness? The problem is with the white " C " wire that comes off the positive side of the battery. None of the instrument panel lights, tail lights, or heater/AC blower work. According to the FSM, they all are on the C wire loop. The wire looks good, but I did find a short at the blower motor. Everytime I hook it up the short connector wire from the battery fries. Any thoughts?

By the way the LC is a 89 FJ62.

There's a fusible link (actually three in a grouping) between the battery and your fuse block that may have blown or just deteriorated over time. If you have the original wiring harness it should be hanging off the + termininal of the battery and has a ring lug that bolts to a wire from the + terminal (protected by a little black plastic guard) and has 2 or 3 plugs on it. Not expensive and still carried by Toyota.

Yup, that would be the smoking wire. It has a ring lug that connects 3 wires to the positive post and 1 wire that connects to the little black plastic box. The other 3 wires go into a plug. What would have caused the fusible link to fail? I fried a Mean Green alt. last week and that seems to be the start of all this.

Also check the big white wire going to the alt....that is tied in also.

Too many amps through 20 year old wiring. Mean Greens are great but they put out 140 amps (IIRC) compared to the stock alternator's 80 amps or so. Sounds like the MG spiked your electrical system as it failed and the fusible link melted as it's suppose to do to protect the wiring system. The alternator is protected by one of the fusible link legs (white 10 ga wire) - just checked the FSM. I'll bet if you replace the alternator and the fusible link you'll be fine.

Thank you. My local Toyota parts guys told me they will have to order the fusible link assembly and have no idea when it will get here. Several other local dealers told me that the either 1. the part was nolonger made, 2. I would have to replace the entire wiring harness, or 3. to bring the truck in to their service dept. I guess when they ask what a FJ62 is, it is time to find someone else.

Call Dan (CDan or Cruiser Dan on Mud) at (800) 432-6668. He's the best part guru for old FJ and works for American Toyota in Alburqueque. Not only will he probably already know the part number for the fusible link but you'll get the IH8MUD discount; he's at extension 8 in the parts department.

Not to slam local Toyota dealerships but must simply don't have the expertise to work or source parts for our "older" rigs.

You won't be disappointed if you call CDan.

I ordered a FL for my 62 from CDan had it in stock for like 14 dollars. Had it in a couple of days.

I have been having the same problem with this circuit. my FL is ok, the problem is the plugs where the FL plugs into . the spade connectors have deteriorated over the years from heat and moisture. I am going to abandon this arangement and install a completely different load buss and fuse panel . will post pics when finished
