Hey, this is great, a TLC forum!
Long story short: after 10 years of being stored in pieces, I'm putting the hard top back on my '82 FJ40. It's going great, considering. Got a lot of good info and links from this site...thanks!
We placed the fiberglass top on the weather strip today. I just sat inside and let the memories wash over me...
Anyway, here's my question:
Should there be rubber washers to go with the two cap bolts that attach the roof to the windshield? My old Man-A-Fre catalog seems to show some sort of washers but the SOR drawing doesn't. If there are rubber washers required, do they go between the end of the bolts and the roof or between the roof and the winshield? Or am I just spacing and there ain't no washers?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
John

no washers on my bj, but there is a small strip of weather stripping in between the top and the windshield if that helps?

No washers, I did put a little sealer on the threads of the bolts so water does not leak in theholes though.

Thanks zach, luckily I've got that strip.
Can anyone else confirm no rubber washers on '82 FJ40 cap nuts?

If you're talking about the two far outside bolts, on my 71 there are four special aluminum washers that fit there. But I don't see why rubber washers could not be used under regular washers. Unless you are wanting the concours look.

I'm not sure how important they really are anyway. Colorado Boy trimmed his corners off his FJ40, so the holes don't exist at all.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Hope to have it bolted down tonight. She sure looks good in original Nordic Blue. Wash and wax this weekend!

Shieldsy,

I'm putting my hard top on this week as well (first time for me as I just got the rig this summer).

One thing I remember from my '72 from 15+ years ago is that I'd get a thin strip of foam weatherstrip from the local hardware store and run it along the edge of the tub where the top comes down, even covering the screw holes (which doesn't matter as the screws'll go right through it). This way, I get a nice seal between the tub and the top.

I actually realized that what I should have done was put the foam strips on the underside of the top instead of the top of the tub. Next year I guess. It just means that in the spring when the top comes off, I may have to pull/scrape off the foam on the tub.

I also ordered a full replacement weatherstripping set for the doors. CCOT had a good deal. I was gonna just buy generic from NAPA but the CCOT set is form-fitted with bends and everything.

Now I just gotta track down a heater for the back and fix the heater up front... or wear really warm clothes! (it gets cold here!)

Hey all,

I just removed my hardtop for the first time. I'm thinking of also ordering to CCOT weatherstrip set, but does it come with all the small little pads for the corners? I'm not even sure how many there were, since when I took it off most of them just crumbled to dust. Thanks

TLC Whee,

what is the reasoning for putting the weatherstripping on the underside of the top? Seems like most of the site have it shown on the body tub instead.

I got a WS kit from CCOT and the little rubber pieces didn't come with them. They are just two open long pieces to be fitted around the doors with some 3M glue (what I used). They fit perfect.

I have a rear heater I'm selling, 50 bux if your interested, PM me at

Thanks

Well, that way when you take the top off in the summer, the weather stripping stays with the top, not the tub, so your summer cruisin' doesn't include wear/exposure to the stripping. Of course, since I'm using $5 Walmart special sticky foam, it doesn't really matter either way.
