how to remove dash plate around ashtray?

I don't have any power to the cig. lighter or power adapter on the center dash (under radio, in front of gear shift). When I remove the ashtray, I can see that wires that should plug into the lighter/adapter are disconnected.

I think the previous owner had something mounted in that space.

I can't manage to reach the wires to reconnect. However it seems that the face plate that covers that area of the dash can be removed, but I can't get it to pop off. Is there a trick?

Use a wide straight blade screwdriver or very stiff putty knife, either with a wrap of duct tape to help prevent scarring of your dash. Gently pry to release the retention clips...
