Hey all,

I've got a 72 40-series and need to remove the brake light switch to either clean or replace it. I can't even see where the wires go from the switch - they seem to go somewhere up towards the speedo. Where does the dongle connect to the harness? Do I need to remove the speedo in order to get to it? I gave that a half-hearted try, but couldn't pull it outward without first removing the speedo cable. Didn't want to rip too much apart without some advice.

Thanks for any help...

There’s a clip on the switch, I think. And a spring washer.

Remove instrument cluster and you will see the switch and wires right in front of you.

Just has a jamb nut securing the switch into the swing pedal assembly.

Got the switch out, thanks for the assist. After spraying down the switch liberally with electronic cleaner, I get continuity between the red wire terminals when the switch is not depressed, and no continuity when depressed. I get no continuity between red and green wire terminals regardless of switch position. Shouldn't I get continuity with the switch not depressed (i.e. brake pedal pushed, switch open)?

Perfect - thanks. Nice diagrams. I have continuity between A and A' and also B and B' when the switch is on, and no continuity when off. So my switch is working properly. Fuses are all good and the turn signals work, so my next step is to clean the light sockets.

How did you check the fuse? By eye or with a ohm tester or volt meter?
A fuse can "look" good but be defective.

Once you get the wires disconnected, it is a bitch but tape the loose wires to the switch body to avoid unnecessary flexing and possible breaking of those wires while you are struggling to get the darn thing out.
Also tape them up when putting it back in.
