Hi there!

The sloped (angled) part of the red piece must point toward the thumb button. This is the mechanical release for the shifter and does not actually shift the gears.

When you say “constantly on” do you mean the Overdrive button on the side of the shifter? Or the thumb button is always pushed in?

thanks for the reply! The thumb button is always on, I assume the wood knob doesn’t fit the leather one. When I screw it in place the shifter release is constantly on. I’ll try to change the position of it.

It sounds like the hole in the new knob isn’t deep enough so when you install the new knob onto the post it is also pushing down the shift release lever (red thing).

First, be sure you’re re-installing the thumb button the correct way. But it should only go in one way....

Here is how to investigate:

1. Remove the two screws that hold the knob on to the post.

2. Lift the knob up slightly until the shift lock engages (lever doesn’t move). The knob may lift up on its own from spring pressure, but try to find out how much you need to raise the knob to re-engage the shift lock. Hopefully the distance is small.

3. If the distance is small it looks like you could cut down the top of the red plastic piece to reduce its height and make the lock engage again (see pic below). If the distance is large you may not be able to remove enough material from the red piece to make it work. But the red piece is pretty tall and it looks like you have a lot of material to work with.

This is a risky thing, though, modifying a part, but hopefully you understand what you’re trying to accomplish. Remove a little height then test again, etc. And the red thing’s part number is 33625-24010 so you could always buy a new one if necessary (1998-2002, not sure what year your truck is):

My issue was very easy and one other reason why I should be happy to have an office job:)

my bad was that I put the wire in the hole for the red shifter thing instead of to the left. Thanks for the help and excellent tutorial!

Great write up, thanks @Ayune ! I’ve used it twice in the last couple months, once to replace the shift indicator plate, and then again when I broke down and forked over the dough for a new leather knob. :)
if anyone wants my old leather knob, let me know. Perhaps it would be an upgrade for somebody…

Gotta say, I went with the vinyl 80 series one and thought it looks good, but that new leather one looks so sweet.

I have a 1998 UZJ100 with the leather shift knob. Can I replace the leather shift knob with a wood trim shift knob from a 2002 LX470?
Will the O/D switch from the LX470 work, or do I need to use the old O/D switch? If I need to use the old O/D switch, can I make it work behind the chrome cover of the LX470 knob?
Thank you.

You can change from leather to wood, but it will cost you $ and frustration if you do not buy a used part. From what I remember, you need to buy: (Verify the part numbers, but from what I can see they are correct):
The wood knob 33542-60110-C0
The O/D switch/knob (Hard to find) 84722-60180
The silver cover around the O/D button 33622-60050
The silver part under the wood knob 33622-60050

In hindsight a used wood knob is probably a lot cheaper:)

I was able to find a “leather pattern” knob that someone covered in leather/wood. I don’t know if it was an OEM leather that someone recovered, or an aftermarket part, but it has worked well for us, and no additional parts were required.

Thank you. Those part numbers are correct. Agree that a used knob with all the parts will be cheaper. ebay has it at around $200

How difficult is it to remove the chrome bezel of the O/D switch? Is the chrome bezel plastic or metal?

it’s rather easy once you have the screws and button out. It’s plastic and a bit fragile/brittle.
I couldn't get the bezel out. do you have some tips on how to remove the bezel? how many locks are holding the bezel? Thank you.

I think 3-4. Have a loo at my picture above. One chrome “fitting/arm” broke and was stuck. So at least 2 below and probably one on top. I think thy are just very tightly fitted but not “popped” in place

Thank you. I was able to get it out without breaking any of the tabs. two are locking tabs, on each side; and two are ordinary tabs to keep it tight, top & bottom. I need to replace the leather and shift lock button as there are a lot of deep scratches. is the wood trim removable?

If this wasn't already common sense....when you pull the shifter off after taking the screws out, keep your thumb on the button or keep an eye on the spring when it shoots out....ask me how I know and why I have to wait until thursday to get a new spring from the dealer....

Didn’t happen to me, but definitely know the feeling:) I tend to multiply all the time estimates here by 3 based on my ability to forget where I put things etc😀 you are not alone!

I had bought a shifter from an 02 lx470 like a year and a half ago. Finally got around to doing the job, only to discover that it was a late '02 build date, so a '03 model year truck with the 5 speed, not 4 speed and the shifter wasn't compatible.

I managed to lose the spring from my truck and the spring from the replacement shifter.

Called the closest Toyota dealer and he said there were 3 available, i'm assuming in the country and one could be mine for around $11.

I still have the old shifter, sans the shredded leather. I was really looking forward to that wood gran.

Ugh.
