How to make a 2L not slow

Okay, I have a 2L in my 86' 4runner. 4.56 gears on 235/70/r16 tires. It will cruise at 80 km/h as long as it is flat, any faster and the engine is just revved too high, I think it's just the tiny tires. But any hill and I'll show down to 60 km/h, even with downshifting. I want a little more power, without the head cracking that the 2lt gets. Maybe a smaller turbo with low boost?

engine swap?? Just kidding. I am not privy on all the ins and outs of 4runner options. But you mentioned downshifting. Do you have an auto or manual?

Manual 5 speed. W56 transmission. If I could find a 1kz or a 5L I would swap if I could.

Was going to say if auto to manual swap but that doesn’t help now. Not sure if adding the turbo is worth the trouble/risk on the 2L.

1kz would be sweet. Would love to have one in my pickup.
