How to know which tyres can and cannot go on a certain width wheel of a particular diameter ? (1 Viewer)

Picked up some nice 16 x 8 6-stud INF branded steel wheels on the weekend. They're going to be used for a trailer not my 80 series (but could be).

I'm considering 245/75r16 or roughly equivalent sized tyres. Are there limits on what width and aspect combo tyres can be fitted to a specific width of a certain diameter wheel and what guides/informs those limits?

On the 80 I run 285/75r16's but have 245/75/r16's on another set of trailer wheels (fitted to another trailer) though I think they are 7 inch not 8 inch, and got thinking...

Every tire manufacturer lists recommended wheel widths for each size tire. Look at the tire specifications from the manufacturer.
