The smog/air pump on my 55 will be getting rebuilt, but today someone said something to me during a conversation about me de-smogging the Pig. He mentioned that if the system is working then leave it smogged and that stock is always easiest and best. He mentioned that most smog systems don't even work anymore.
That got me thinking. How would I know that the system is completely working? Would it be very obvious if it weren't?

on the air injection system if its not working ,excessive after burning in exhaust ,rough engine idle, abnormal idle speed ,noisy air pump, burned or loose check valve and cracked hoses .these are what the factory service manual list as some causes

you can go thru each system with the FSM to test functionality-up to a certain point. sooner or later, you just have to get it tested to know for sure, but best to determine all components are functional before...if the system is mostly intact, then you should keep it, fix it. if most of it doesn't work, you should ditch it if your state will let you...the older vintage systems had different components for each year and for cali vs fed. almost none of the parts are interchangable. once you get to mid 1980 year, then all the carbs and all the emissions equipment are interchangable...HTH
